This was a lot more emotional and hard hitting than I originally expected. This hit hard on "light" homophobia and racism, where friends and family are making jokes about gay sex and how the main character isn't brown even though he's Mexican. Some parts were actually pretty hard to listen to, and there were lots of trigger warnings

This book is a spiritual experience...one that you need to push past the first half to understand properly. Understanding the character's views and their actions, the side characters and the way they behave, and their relationships with everyone in the book takes time.

In a lot of ways, this was the most realistic book I've read, while I didn't necessarily like how it dealt with problems of race and Max's take on a lot of things...I truly appreciated how it dealt with topics of toxic masculinity, rape, addiction, and the stereotype of being the 'gay best friend'.

I loved the development in Max's character overall and was definitely more partial towards him when it comes to picking a favorite, a mix raced gay kid in a white neighborhood. I loved seeing him grow, accept what had happened, and try moving past the trauma. Everything was really well done.

When it came to Jordan's character, however...I couldn't shake off the feeling that the character lacked the depth that Max did, well written but not quite it.

It's a must-read and while being really cute and queer, it's also informative and gets you thinking.

The plot had a lot of potential but I don’t like how it was executed. The relationship felt rushed and I would have wanted more pining. They started dating out of nowhere in my opinion and it didn’t flow very nicely.
The characters were really likable and the relationships between them were quite realistic yet somewhat caricatural. The characters all had realistic flaws which played nicely into their character development.
This book also brought up some important issues like racism, homophobia, addiction, mental health and even rape.

This book took me completely by surprise.

Not only does it show an honest story between two young gay boys, it shows the relationship between mother and son, father and son, and friendships. It shows how men can just as easily be sexually assaulted and raped as women; and and that addiction comes in many forms. If I didn't know any addicts, I wouldn't have been able to sympathise with Jordan's mum. For addicts to truly get the help they need, they have to want it because nothing is more important than their fix, not even their kids. I adored that Max was Hispanic/Latino, as it showed brought another layer of male posturing and homophobia, not only within sports but also within other cultures.

Jordan and Max had a really cute relationship, the way they argued and grew as a couple, with all their own issues before realising that a problem shared is a problem halved, and eventually knew that they could rely on each other no matter what.

I can't wait for this author's next book.
