Fry's witty comments and dry humour make this worth reading. Mythology has always fascinated me, especially since modern entertainment tends to borrow from the old myths. I knew the vague stories of the well known myths but Fry's retelling make them more funny and interesting. I listened to the audiobook version of this and Fry's own voice makes it even better. He goes into a lot of detail (as much as he can without making this a tome) and by just adding a clever little remark here and there, he manages to involve the reader to make this a fascinating re-telling rather than a boring account of Greek mythology. Would recommend.

A great book with an overview of the biggest Greek myths, gods and other important figures in history.

Objectively, it was written very well, and I think would work as a great point of reference if you ever needed to read an individual Greek myth. However, reading this straight through was a challenge since it didn’t necessarily feel as though there was a thread holding everything together (other than time, since it is “chronological”).

Things I found most interesting were stories I already knew or the striking similarities between these myths and some stories from The Bible.

I had an assist from the audiobook, since I could not have finished this by just reading the e-book, and Stephen Fry’s narration was immaculate. I would recommend co-reading and listening to this if you’re going straight through like I did.

Am I a mythology girlie now?  I devoured this - I've always found the Greek myths interesting, but Fry's approach made them even more accessible.  The illustrations in this edition are beautiful as well.  This might be a great gift to give to the mythology lovers in your life!

I got the original English Version first, and it's a nice book but I was just reading it soo slowly. All the names foe the "creatures" are different than in my mother tongue, so I chose to get the translated version instead and make it a more low-threshold and enjoyable read.
I really like that the English version has a few maps and pedigrees of the goddesses and gods in the front though! The German version, sadly, does not.
