An account of Ernaux's abortion in the 1960s in France (truly depressing that this is now relevant 60 years later in the U.S.). The description of abortion is really detailed and graphic, and you feel Ernaux's stress alongside her as she nearly dies after her abortion (which she still is grateful for). I felt like it sort of tapered off at the end, with no real finish, which I didn't love. I did like that she made her abortion as just this Thing that happened to her, and that the actual abortion itself wouldn't have been so rough if people around her would have just helped her get one cheaply and safely. Again, depressingly relevant.

haunting, graphic, and so important. I don’t care what people say, I think this was an incredibly brave thing for Ernaux to publish at the height of her literary career and gives voice to many with similar experiences.

Really great knowing that my country has decided that abortions are no longer okay 🙃.  just such a comforting feeling, isn’t it??? I hope pro-life people understand that outlawing abortion doesn’t make it less common, it just makes it incredibly dangerous.

Kirjaa on tosi vaikea arvioida, jotta omat fiilikset oikeasti tulee esille. Suosittelen tätä aivan älyttömästi kaikille. Jos abortti tuntuu aiheena hirveänä, vielä tärkeämpi lukea. Toivottavasti samankaltaiset tarinat saadaan pian historiaan kaikkialla maailmassa.
