I'm only giving this three stars instead of two because it was an easy and fast read. Not much happened and I'm definitely not okay with Mat's rape nor with the reactions he got when he told someone. If the roles were reversed, so many people would jump on it, but now they make it seem like it's not a big deal.
Also, what happened to the cliffhanger at the end of the previous book? I was waiting for this one to pick it up again, but suddenly all the tension and exciting parts were gone.
I feel like the series could've been wrapped up in max seven books instead of fourteen. Nothing is really happening anymore except for the endings of these books.

I took a break half way through this book. A long break. The slow pace was a challenge to keep going - it felt like the plot was just a continuation of the previous book with no resolutions in sight. The second half was better and the action continued right into the last chapter. I think I've said this before but I really like how real/flawed the characters are and how the overlapping POVs show how differently they interpret the same experiences.

One of the best in the series. I have my issues with Matt’s story later in the book, but there is so much pay off to the set up of the earlier book here! I’m surprised this is considered the start of “The Slog”
Graphic: Colonisation, Grief, and Slavery
Minor: Fatphobia and Sexual assault
Sexual assault treated as joke because the inappropriate behavior and lack of consent is perpetrated by a woman to a man, and in the end is recontextualized as mutual consent but is not presented as that in the moment or for any discussion of the situation after until the very last interaction between the two characters. The worst part is it is all clearly supposed to be funny and it reads badly from a modern perspective.goblinbookclub's review against another edition
