A magical Scottish Isle named Cadence. Two warring clans, the Tamarlaines and the Breccans. A wayward bard called home. Young Tamarlaine lasses going missing. The summoned spirits unable to speak of their whereabouts. Old rivals and a marriage of convenience.
This was an excellent story, though slowly paced. The story and writing reminded me of Adrienne Young's Spells for Forgetting: slow paced mystery on a magic Island and a young man called home after many years.
This is the second book I've read by Rebecca Ross. Both are first books of a series (this one a duology), and both have ended with star-crossed lovers. I really used to love this trope, as it just resonated with my single self yearning for the unconditional love of another. As a married woman I don't want to experience the heartache of it, so I resent an author making me feel that way. How dare you Rebecca! Reader be warned.
However, I dearly loved the atmospheric writing. I liked the mystery. I liked the world. Jack, Sidra, and Mirin are my favorites. I want to know more about the rivers system, and the Fire Spirit, Ash. I will absolutely be reading A Fire Endless once I recover.
Thank you @beccajross for hosting the read-a-long!

on paper, this sounds like exactly the kind of book i would have enjoyed, so i'm the most surprised that my experience was underwhelming.

I really liked this and I can’t really fault it for anything but the chapters being too long. I already have the second book in my possession

Loved this book! Can't wait to read the second one.
It kept me guessing and I never guessed how it was going to end. The writing style was fabulous!
