Conceptually very interesting, and characters have depth. Unfortunately, we know exactly who *die Jaegerin* (The Huntress) is from almost the beginning – so there's not much suspense in the present, from Ian's point of view. Having more suspicious characters, or at least attempting to, would have improved this for me. The obviously-European stepmother and obviously-German "antiquities expert" just didn't leave much room for speculation.
Jumping between two separate timelines and multiple POVs also makes this book much longer – the first 40% or so was gripping and historical, but after that it was more of a slog.
The real story seems to lie in the inter-personal relationships unfolding, and maybe that's what the author was aiming for. Personally, I would have preferred the story about the Russian night-witches to be its own, and the hunt for the Huntress another entirely – perhaps split as a sequel/prequel.

I enjoyed this book a lot, but not quite as much as her first book. I think the thing that struck me the most was that part of me couldn’t help but like the huntress, which only goes to show how three-dimensional her character was. Great character development throughout and good strong plot. Would recommend.
