Mehhhh. Been big into historical fiction so I read hoping it would be good but it was cheesy and rushed which is my biggest qualm in a book where I’m supposed to believe in a characters love story

Thank you to Forever for the gifted copy of Our Last Goodbye!  All opinions in this review are my own.

May cannot catch a break!  Everything bad happens to this poor woman!  I like that the focus for this World War II historical fiction novel is how May is affected by the war.  I feel like most other WWII include heroic actions by the main characters, but May is just a normal woman trying to live her life during this difficult time.

I wish I had known that this is a sequel to Orphan Sisters so I could have read it first.  However, it is possible to read Our Last Goodbye without reading Orphan Sisters first.

This was another wonderful book by Shirley Dickson. This book is set during WW 2 where we meet May who lost her mother in a tragic accident. We follow Mays story through the book and we also meet her good friend Etty. After her mother is killed May decides to make her mother proud and applies to her local hospital to become a nurse. This story is such an emotional one at times. I found myself with tears in my eyes at times whilst reading it. The author has a fabulous way with words and as you read you can almost imagine yourself there during these hard times.

A little note this book some of you may recognise May and Etty from a previous novel by this author called The Orphan sisters. However this book Our Last Goodbye can easily be read as a stand-alone.

Right from the opening chapter I could sense just what an emotional journey the author was going to take me on. May, my heart went out to as she has a lot on her plate for someone so young.

The author weaves a tale of which had me spell bound. From picking the book up, I didn’t want to go anywhere as I was so wrapped up in the era that I had been transported to. You could feel the emotions from the characters and their hopes and worries about the war.

There are some lovely characters in the story. It always amazes me how people would open up their homes and help others out in times of need. May’s friendship with some of the characters was so endearing and a good reminder of what is really important in life.

Our Last Goodbye is a wonderful saga of love and friendship. It is a truly emotional read that had me shed tears of happiness and sadness. The authors writing skills brings the world war era very much to life in what it was like to live in those times. May’s story is one that will certainly pull on the heart strings and I loved every minute of it. An emotional and compelling read.

My thanks to BookOuture and NetGalley for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.

On a foggy night in 1943, May Robinson loses her mother in an accident. Wanting to make her proud, May applies to be a nurse at the local hospital where she meets a handsome porter, Richard. May is hiding secrets, but Richard isn't - everyone there knows that he's a conscientious objector and treats him as such.

This was such a good book! Poor May just couldn't seem to catch a break - talk about kicking someone when they're down! There were a few times when I just wanted to shake some sense into her, but she ended up becoming a strong character.  And Richard - he was such a good character. The way he was treated for his beliefs made my heart ache!

3.5 stars. This was such an emotional story. The hardships that May had to overcome were just never ending. I loved her as a character and I feel like all of the characters were very well developed. The romances for me seemed a little rushed and I'm not sure I was really invested in them. I feel like the ending was solid and satisfying. A pet peeve of mine was the over use of the phrase "in his/her/my minds eye".

May decides to pursue nursing, something she has always wanted to do but never believed she could. After her mother dies, she makes a promise to make a go of it and try to be something and nursing will also do good for the war. She can help others, while finding herself. Hardly believing she passes the entrance exams May heads off to nursing school in the midst of war. It is quick learning, and trying times but she feels good about all she is accomplishing.

However, the secret she has kept still harbors in the back of her mind and the burden of another secret she recently found out has May questioning life in general. She doesn’t have much family left, yet she is realizing that is all that matters as she gets herself into a situation she never thought she’d be in again.

This was another great WWII novel, and this one had a focus on the nursing side as well as how those who refused to go off to fight were looked at. It was a very interesting read, as I had not thought of those who had refused to fight and had to try and find elsewhere that would take them and not look at them as a coward, while every other male that was able bodied was gone.

Thank you to Forever & Grand Central Publishing for the free book. I love my WWII novels, and was excited to read this one, as I LOVED The Orphan Sisters. I highly recommend both of these books!
