My first ever King book. To start with, when Charlie meets Mr Bowditch and cares for him, I really enjoyed it. Once it got to the Empis bit, I found it waned for me. I found it hard to visualise the world he was describing, and it became a bit of a slog towards the end for me, unfortunately.

What an amazing world Stephen King has build here! I was really transported to the world, like I was going along with him on the adventure!

King later books often feel like two or more books smooshed together and Fairy Tale is no different. The first 1/3 of the book is a slice-of-life, boy and his dog, young man befriends old man story. It's not bad but it's 200 page and it could've been 50 page and the book overall would've been stronger for it. Usually, I love King's slice-of-life, but this one just felt like a lot of wheel spinning and setup that doesn't actually pay off in the end. If I was rating THAT book I'd give it maybe 2 stars and that would be more out of loyalty to King as a Constant Reader. However at the 1/3 point the book becomes something else entirely. A hero's journey through a magical land. Think Narnia meets Escape from New York. This second books is a huge step up and kept me turning the pages. I'd give THAT book 4 stars. Not near King's best but still a fun page turner.
So my 3 star rating is me splitting the difference. If I could give half I'd do 3.5.
