I’m kind of at a loss for words because I cried on and off through the entire second half of this book. It made me feel a lot of things, some good and some bad, but all in the best possible way. I read this in one sitting, in between throwing my kindle across my bed a few times and having to get up and walk off some of my emotions, I honestly could not stop reading. I haven’t had this type of reading experience in a while.

I chose to read this book off of an Instagram post recommending good romance books to read in February. Not really knowing too much about the plot, other than an American girl goes to Oxford and falls in love with a British professor. I was looking for a light rom-com book, as you will. This was not that and also so much more than that, and it caught me truthfully by surprise. I went into it with no expectations and it completely blew me away. I found myself dreading that the book was almost over in those final pages, waiting to see what was going to happen to these characters I’d become so attached to, and also sort of knowing that there was only one way it could end. I find that some of the best books have predictable endings, but it’s the graceful way they lead you to it that makes it a great reading experience. I fell in love with the characters, the setting of Oxford, and the love story most of all, despite knowing it was always going to break my heart in the end.

I’m truly so thankful I stumbled across this title, it was a wonderful surprise and a lot of emotions, and one of the best things I’ve read in quite a while.

Love Julia Wehlan’s narration, and the overall academic experience and setting, plus the exploration of father/daughter relationships. Last third of the book felt completely different from the beginning and surprised me.

This started off rather slow. I was convinced it would be a straightforward 3-star read for me: nothing too surprising or out of the ordinary, just an easy contemporary novel. But around halfway through, that shifted for me. What I expected to be a run-of-the-mill rom-com type scenario when I started ended up pulling at more heartstrings than I anticipated. I read the second half of the book in one sitting on my day off! This doesn't quite pack the punch that a 5-star read would for me, but it's a pretty solid 4. Maybe a 3.75, because of that slow start. It was a sweet premise and I loved the American-in-Oxford vibes. Left me satisfied and having felt a range of emotions!

Julia Whelan knows the perfect way to pull at your heartstrings with a story equally as touching as it is fun

At the beginning the main girl really needed a chill pill and would def be the classmate to remind the teacher about homework but she got better and I ended up liking it better than I thought I would
