In the era of picture-perfect lives, we often forget that it's okay not to be okay. A content life doesn't mean wearing a constant smile. Just as a garden requires both sun and rain to flourish, we need a mix of emotions to thrive.” 🌻💖

If you're someone who's always on the lookout for ways to better yourself and understand the complexities of human psychology, this book is a must-read. However, it's worth noting that while it does provide a solid foundation in theory, some readers might find that much of the advice offered here echoes what's already available for free online or within various therapy communities. Nonetheless, I approached this book as a valuable resource to navigate through the intricacies of life, from managing fluctuating moods and staying motivated to dealing with emotional pain, grief, self-doubt, and fear, all while striving for a deeper sense of mindfulness.

What sets this book apart is its remarkable accessibility; the language used is not only friendly but also incredibly clear, making complex concepts easy to grasp. Additionally, the inclusion of chapter summaries, complete with key points, at the end of each section enhances comprehension and serves as a handy reference tool for readers to revisit.

Despite the possibility that some of the information might already be familiar, I firmly believe that this book holds value for everyone, whether it serves as a gentle reminder, a source of inspiration, or a lifeline for those currently grappling with their mental health. The relatable tone adopted by the author further enhances its appeal; weaving in personal stories and experiences to illustrate key points without a hint of superiority or condescension, making it a genuinely engaging read.

Moreover, the practical toolbox provided within the pages offers tangible exercises, particularly centered around journaling, which prove immensely beneficial for those struggling to cope with the stresses of daily life. Each chapter is succinct yet packed with invaluable insights, ensuring that readers walk away with actionable strategies to implement in their own lives. The inclusion of end-of-chapter summaries not only reinforces learning but also encourages readers to jot down practical tools for future use, effectively transforming this book into a personalized guide for self-improvement and mental well-being.

I’ve never read a self-help type book before. Some things I really have never heard before:

“Whether your low mood is mild and intermittent or you live with a major depressive disorder, exercise has potent antidepressant effects (Schuch et al., 2016). For those who use antidepressant medication, adding in exercise leads to better results (Mura et al., 2014). Exercise leads to higher circulating levels of dopamine as well as more available dopamine receptors in the brain “(Olsen, 2011). This means it increases your capacity for pleasure in everyday life (McGonigal, 2019). So finding exercise you enjoy does not only offer you joy while you are exercising, but increases your sensitivity to find joy in all the other aspects of your life.”

“Grow around the wound. The wound that is left following a loss is not something to be fixed or healed. We do not want to forget that person, we want to remember them and continue to feel connected to them. So the wound does not diminish or disappear. It remains while we work hard to build a life around it… The person is just as important to you as they ever were and so the pain of losing them continues. But we find a way to acknowledge their life while beginning to grow and create a life with meaning and purpose alongside that grief. You find ways to remember, celebrate and feel your connection to that person, and to keep living”

as someone whose been in a lot of therapy, many of the ideas in this book are things that i have already learned. i think it’s a worthy read if you are looking to better yourself if you don’t want to actually go to therapy, but therapy is better!

This was a great therapy crash course in tools to take care of yourself, manage stress and tough feelings, vulnerability. A good book to have on the shelf when difficulties arise and to go back and read sections of again
