If 'I Am Death' were a cake then it would have all of the correct ingredients to be a success - Tension, pace, gore. Yet I can't help but find it lacking a certain flare. That extra special swirl of yummy butter-cream. I read the whole book in less than a week, I kept picking the novel up even when I just had a few moments to spare, but did I enjoy it? No. Not really.

Let us continue with our baking metaphor. A good crime/Thriller is a chocolate cake, with huge gooey chunks of chocolate hidden inside the sponge. These gooey surprises are the plot twists which make our mouths water and keep us eating (Reading). But they only work well when there is a solid sponge from the start. If we have no clues about our killer or the crimes then we cannot be surprised. A twist cannot be a twist if there isn't a plot or a clue in which to twist. Chris Carter keeps us so in the dark alongside Hunter and Garcia, that we can't even tell that the sponge is chocolate. I feel like I have no role in the novel, if that makes sense. I am there to observe Hunter and Garcia only, I don't have anything to work out or to connect, I just watch it all unfold.

When there are no clues or bread-crumbs and then suddenly there is a 'twist' I feel like an idiot for not having seen it, yet there was no reason that I should. I feel like Chris Carter is playing me and that I am not worthy. And this takes away the enjoyment of working things out and being there alongside your lead characters and narrators.

I hope these ramblings make sense. A good read, but not an enjoyable read in summary.

The most gruesome book yet in the Robert Hunter series, I enjoyed 'An Evil Mind' more but this book like all of the books in this series was amazing!!! I love Chris Carters writing, there was quite a few spelling mistakes I noticed in this one too, but I got over it and totally enjoyed the story! And the way the murderer became the murderer was pretty awesome. Loved it!

4.5 Stars

Overview: Yes, I know...I've given this book 4 and a half stars and not 5. Don't hate me! I have my reasons, but it's still a fantastic book and I will absolutely recommend CC until I'm blue in the face. The title of this book is possibly my favourite out of them all.

Good points: I am so glad to have Garcia back, although at the start it was touch and go for a moment and I was close to slamming the book shut in protest (IYKYK). But the dynamic duo are back and kicking butt again. Yey! The deaths are as graphic and bloody as ever.

Not so good points: Okay...the reason it's a 4.5 and not a 5... I didn't feel the plot was as unique as his previous books (quickly hides behind a rock while CC fans throw things at me). I saw the twists coming and guessed the ending and that's the first time that's happened with a CC book. Maybe it's because I'm used to his writing style now? I'm not sure.

That aside, these books are the best crime thrillers I've ever read. So start reading a CC today!

This book was so gripping.
I loved the changes in the size of chapters, I could go through 20 at a time and I struggle to remain focused.
This was so incredible. I felt anxious at times, freaked out and just so engaged with what I was reading. Fantastic book !
