While I didn't comnect with or 'get' all the poems, there were others that were so strong! Here is an excerpt that I've been thinking about all day.

"Somehow I knew
the planets were making
themselves visible

out of sheer
generosity, as if
they had decided
earthlings were just

too sad, wafting about
in space, feeling so
alone."

I started reading The Latest Winter and felt disconnected...from the poetry, from the imagery, from it all. I said as much to my coworker. She was flabbergasted. "But I love Maggie Nelson," she said, looking at me askance. I decided to keep at it. And maybe it was the releasing of expectations or a gift from the universe for my dogged perseverance... but the next time I picked up The Latest Winter, I fell in love. Hard. It's gorgeous and wrenching. And now my copy is beloved and dog-eared.

it's never good when you look at a half-read book from across the room and think all right, let's get this over with

MAGGIE NELSON <3

I struggle to write nuanced thoughts on poetry lol, but I really liked this - the concept really reached out to me, and I feel that Nelson's execution was excellent.

4.5. One of the most thoughtful gifts I’ve ever received. I love you, Janae.

Some of these are really good; some feel like Maggie Nelson is intentionally trying to make them cryptic to sound smart while keeping us out.

Just today-i felt new for the first time this century -no one noticed me- I was unsexed!-

How do you love men and women if you want to love people one at a time
or one for a very long time. Where
Does the other love go. Where is
Loves home. Do you love
What loves you? Do you still
Love me? I love you.

You were there, I was there.
I wasn't unhappy, I wasn't scared.
I want you to know
I conducted a war for this,
a war to lose my life. I lost it,
I lost it. I reduced it to
a death canoe
and it still came out
as life.

I so wish you were here, to lay
Your ear against mine, hear
The hollow flapping in my head

It was the souls of people
I think it was the souls of people
