Jarring, haunting. Like the great gatsby, but better.

Could have read more. Interested in the plight of loyalty to race and loyalty to self.

I read an article regarding this book/movie that stated, “In stories about passing, the interloper is usually punished because they tried to be white. In Passing, Clare is punished because she longed to return. But no one, not even her own people, long for her.” That was a profound analysis. I appreciate that this book took a slightly different approach to tackling the topic of passing. What really fascinated me is what actually happened at the end with Clare’s demise… did Irene push her, did John, or did she do it herself because she was tired of living a lie?
