If a romcom is marketed as: “it’s not really about the romance, many other things are going on!!” I weirdly expect it to pass the Bechdel test and I’m not sure this one does. It was entertaining tho (around the obviously less happy storylines) and a fast read, for which I was in the mood. Actually wouldn’t have minded more romance scenes for this one because I liked their chemistry and the more serious bits dragged on a bit too much for me (particularly the bits building up to a dramatic movie climax scene).
(Actually, as a dramatic person myself I would like to assert that this was too dramatic a method for closure. Although advising therapy is used as a manipulation tactic in this story I feel it would actually have been a fine way forward).
Ah well

I really love Mhairi McFarlane’s writing but listening to this was too stressful for me at this moment in my life. Definitely check out the content warnings before reading and if they don’t hit too close to home, read away. She’s an excellent writer, just don’t go in expecting an easy breezy rom com!

Trigger warning on this, as there is much more depiction of emotional abuse than the blurb might lead you to believe. This is a heartrending but at the same time hopeful story. Closed-door romance but that’s not really the main point of the book, it’s more about the lead finding herself again.

This is the most non traditional rom com ever. Was it messy yes. Was it steamy…slow burn yes. Do you love the characters yes. Is it also a cautionary tale about giving your heart to mean men. Also yes. When I tell you this book breaks your heart to mend it back together. It does that. Also Roxy was it…fuck her total how do they say it across the pond. Slag. I knew when Brooke rated it 5 stars it would not disappoint.

Wow I did not expect this book at all. I thought I was reading a sweet lil romance novel to relax, but instead I got so much more. The story twists and turns in directions I honestly didn’t always see coming until the characters themselves did lol. It was sad, dark, but also very light and funny. I’m obsessed with the way she writes, and the particular words and manner of speaking she employs. It’s so different and refreshing from the typical “chick lit” novels and the way the plot progresses. I feel like each situation actually makes sense and the characters feel like real people making real decisions rather than overblown caricatures to fulfill the plot or move the narrative. It hooked me with the way it was written, then I stayed for the lovable characters and honestly, WILD plot. Would recommend!!
