This should be required reading for EVERYONE. I need more people to read this because it was such a gut punch and I’m just here trying to make sense of all the things I read. There is just so much packed into this graphic novel that it’s hard to get my thoughts in order to make a coherent review. Especially when my thoughts were just a revolving door of “WTF?!”, “holy shit!”, and “colonialism is an absolute bitch”. Seriously, my inner monologue was one giant swear word generator the entire time I was reading. Squire is honestly one of the most eye opening stories I’ve ever read and it’s getting a solid five stars. Please, please read this!

Pros:

  • The story deals with important topics and portrays them well.
  • The art conveys mood very effectively.
  • The outfit designs are gorgeous and detailed.
  • All the beautifully illustrated horses and camels (dromedaries?)
  • The chapter where the characters wrote letters home had a cinematic quality I really liked.

Cons:

  • I found some of the more action-heavy scenes a bit hard to follow.
  • I wasn’t able to get fully immersed (but that’s the case with most graphic novels, so it’s probably more of a me problem)

With the section 'Squire and History' at the end of the graphic novel bc my reading comprehension is poor enough to be mostly unable to pick up on subtext unless if someone points them out to me as added context, the themes were really well executed and the storyline is quite well done. The characters also did stuff/ reacted in ways that made sense and the art popped off the page. A sequel would be really cool.

I really loved this book with its Middle East (Jordan I believe specifically) setting and the protagonist from an ethnicity that’s thought of as “the enemy”. The characters are nuanced and not all are what they seem. The characterizations are all spot on. The main fault with this book is that it kind of wraps up a bit too fast. At least there’s a tease for a potential sequel.
