This should be required reading for EVERYONE. I need more people to read this because it was such a gut punch and I’m just here trying to make sense of all the things I read. There is just so much packed into this graphic novel that it’s hard to get my thoughts in order to make a coherent review. Especially when my thoughts were just a revolving door of “WTF?!”, “holy shit!”, and “colonialism is an absolute bitch”. Seriously, my inner monologue was one giant swear word generator the entire time I was reading. Squire is honestly one of the most eye opening stories I’ve ever read and it’s getting a solid five stars. Please, please read this!

Pros:

  • The story deals with important topics and portrays them well.
  • The art conveys mood very effectively.
  • The outfit designs are gorgeous and detailed.
  • All the beautifully illustrated horses and camels (dromedaries?)
  • The chapter where the characters wrote letters home had a cinematic quality I really liked.

Cons:

  • I found some of the more action-heavy scenes a bit hard to follow.
  • I wasn’t able to get fully immersed (but that’s the case with most graphic novels, so it’s probably more of a me problem)

Beautiful, dynamic art. Love a story about girls with swords. I felt the art and narrative worked together perfectly to tell a story with adventure and danger and mixing in personal identity and growth. It also explored themes of war and colonialism and what history is. Ending left me wanting more. I felt one chapter closed but another should be beginning for Aiza and her friends. I want more!
