A quite good book but is a bit philosophical and therefore feels a bit floaty and without any point.
The author gets around the arctic but the book lacks flow.
A flawed but still a good book

Rich in detail and comprehensive in scope, Arctic Dreams imparts a great deal of knowledge of the vast northern region. However, although the writing style was poetic at times, I found myself often zoning out or becoming bored (and I picked this up with interest in the topic due to a forthcoming trip to the Arctic, so I imagine those with a less vested interest may have a similar reaction). 3.5 stars for me.

Beautiful writing, just not the right moment for it. I'll pick it up again someday.

Fields of study touched upon in this book: Anthropology, Ethnography, Zoology, Ecology, Geography, Demography, Philosophy, and Theology. As such, there is a lot of content to process and absorb while reading here (for me, most easily done with several Arctic maps handy on my iPad). I think the parts of this book I most enjoyed reading were the author's musings upon the unique character and dignity of the Arctic, and the role the land played in shaping who he is as a person.

I've wanted to visit the Canadian Arctic for a long time (probably since I read [b:Two Against the North] in elementary school), and this reading this book has only renewed that desire. It has also reminded me to pay more attention to federal policy and industrial development in the area!

A terrific and inspirational read.

One of the most descriptive, informative, thoughtful, introspective, and melancholy books I've ever read. Now one of my favorites, too.

This book has been on my shelf for a long time and I finally picked it up and I'm so glad I did. Lopez's use of language is exquisite and the intense detail that he brings to so many different elements of the Arctic, from the people, to the birds, the light, and the water is just ... remarkable.
