I read these individual issues as they came out in 2010 & 2011. I really enjoyed this series as vampires were still vampires & didn’t “sparkle”, plus I also liked how different Skinner, Pearl, & Hattie were in comparison to the “traditional” myths of vampirism. I do plan on going thru the collection of graphic novels I have for this series.

Times have changed since the origin of the American Vampire and progress now means flashing lights and Las Vegas getting one of the world's great creations with the building of the Hoover Dam. Little does the city know but the skill and money behind its creation is a lot more sinister than a bunch of rich businessmen. When these men start getting murdered though, it's going to take Las Vegas's police chief and the help from federal agents to get to the bottom of the case.

I enjoyed the expansion of this world and even though it's not a mind-blowing series for me, I find myself enjoying the concepts and creativity of the material. One of my favorite parts was listening to the discussions on the different types of vampires and what is known about their strengths and weaknesses. I was surprised by the slow progression of changing around who we identify as the American Vampire (because of their species title) and how that changes the perspective of the story. I love that each volume ends up being a different era in American history and it makes me look forward to seeing what the next one has in store.

Despite the fact that I've forgotten most of everything that happened in volume 1, I still found this to be a good read. And the memories come back soon enough- Pearl is awesome, Skinner's misunderstood, and vampires are super scary. This one leaves me a little more on the edge of my seat, as far as wondering what will happen in the next one. There's some unfinished business with Hattie, and it promises to be really creepy.

This excellent series continues. We get two stories: one for Skinner Sweet, which is the main story in the book, and one for Pearl Jones. Skinner has now moved to Las Vegas just as it is booming with the construction of Hoover Dam. One of the strengths of the series is the historical detail, which enriches the series, and it is very apparent in this volume. We learn not only more of the vampires, but now a new secret group of vampire hunters emerges as well to complicate things. Overall, we get a good fast paced story. The Pearl piece is a bit slower, but it is still good and worth reading. It does leave a bit of a cliffhanger, which is fine as I will definitely be looking up the third volume when it is out; it's to be set in World War II, so it should get even more interesting. I wish Pearl's story would have had a bit more depth, the reason I only give this four stars. Otherwise, this is a great series. The series continues to get better and maintain its good story lines and new take on the vampire genre.

If you are sick and tired of wussy vampires, and about to give up on the whole genre, do yourself a favor and pick this series up. It will restore your faith in the genre. Plus, if you like your stories with historical settings, the series does very well in depicting good Americana and history of the times the characters live in.

Awesome follow up to the first volume. I loved the art again and the characters were interesting this time around and I'm excited to see what happens in the next volume.

What?

Maybe I'm out of the loop, but is this normal for modern comics? To me, there were no decipherable plotlines, no meaningful action or even mood either. Everything seemed random. Maybe I'm old school. There was nothing special about it, even with Stephen King as an author.

I didn't get it. I mean, it could get better with the next issues, but honestly, this didn't interest me enough to read more. I love Scott Snyder to death. This just isn't for me.

Vampire Sweet is at it again. He wants the city. He wants your blood. Pearl and Hattie may have ended on bad terms at the end of volume 1, but it doesn't mean they don't have another chance at friendship. There's a new player in town. He is more connected to the undertow of Las Vegas. Just wait and see how.
