This book in the series was not my favorite. I found the setting and history of the region not as interesting as previous books. The chapter quotes at the beginning are from an English man of the cloth and Holmes' godfather, Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould. Perhaps if I had read The Hound of the Baskervilles first, I would have enjoyed it more.

Another good Mary Russell mystery. I didn't like this as well as the others just because it took forever to get into. It was very slow going. However, the moody spooky aspect of the moor and the tying in of the Hounds of the Baskervilles kept me reading.

I loved this book. A gem in the series, stomping all over the familiar ground of the Baskervilles with irreverent and yet affectionate pleasure. It was delightful to revisit this old literary haunt with Russell and Holmes. Fabulous.

Overall the book is excellent. I love Ms. King's subtle humor and intelligent writing. However, I felt there were fewer connecting moments between Holmes and Russell. The previous novel had such a poignancy about the couple, that I was (ever so slightly) disappointed with what I perceived as more of a separateness between the married couple. There were a few tender moments where we are permitted to peer inside the deeper layers of their marriage and this was very worthwhile.
I also felt a small lack of "Holmesness" in the story. He was absent far more than usual. On the bright side this gave us a good look at what Mary Russell can accomplish herself. And I do love Mary Russell.

Not quite a full 4 star - there were a few bits that I thought dragged but I really appreaciated both the "local color" and the plot twists.
