This was a funny, touching, and heart-warming audiobook experience. Loved all of the extra special effects, however there wasn't as much as I was expecting there to be. It took me a while to get into the one-sided conversation structure, but I grew to enjoy Cara Humara and was rooting for things to get better for her.

I listened to the audiobook, the narration and production are excellent and really engaging. I recommend listening as I don't know how well this story translates to the page or if I would have enjoyed it as much by reading instead of listening.

This book used a unique format to tell an experience of one woman’s life long strength in the face of various challenges (for lack of a better word). I just wish the main character was more likeable - I think her portrayal is very realistic of so many people… but perhaps a little introspection and self-growth would have warmed me up to her. Ultimately, I felt sorry for Angela and Fernando who were victims of her actions and behaviour. But these actions were ultimately the result of her own experiences… the classic cycle of generational trauma. This book was worth a read for its interesting perspective, universal experiences and unique format. It was also a lesson in my own patience and understanding with a main character whose reasoning I didn’t like.

Cara Romero is an immigrant from Dominican Republic who left her country to save herself and her son. After many years at a job a lighting company, she finds herself unemployed and has to attend job counseling in order to keep receiving her unemployment benefits.

Her sessions with her counselor are wholly unproductive and are recounted in this novel in the form of their conversations. While I read the physical book, I swear I could “hear” Cara in my head and she regaled the counselor with the stories of her life. The stories were hilarious and gut wrenching by turn, and, at the end, her personal growth was evident - which, for me, is the most satisfying of stories. Cara was a great character and I enjoyed reading her story.

If you enjoy stories written in a unique structure, told in the first person, with characters that are funny, relatable, flawed yet loveable. Do yourself a favor. Go grab a copy of this audiobook and thank me later.

I liked Cara more and more as the book went on. Truly a unique protagonist and heartfelt read.
