Although I generally love this series, this one is too dated (poor representation of women) and political (needs more adventure and less politics) for me.

I was told by family that if I just stuck with it that it would get better, and boy did it ever! This is what I signed up for when I started reading Clive Cussler books! While there are still mild undertones of classic racism, this one was far better than the ones previous to it when it came to levels of racism and misogyny, although there is still some of that present too.

Overall, a great action novel with a, in my opinion, satisfactory ending.

Published March 22nd 1984 by Hamish Hamilton
This was one of the books in my previous mentioned 'Gold Mine' at a yard sell purchases.
I will not freak Mr. Cussler out on what I paid for this gem. However, I often wonder what went on behind the closed doors of the woman who sold them to me after her husband found out. Hmmm
This was definitely on of my top favorites on the Dirk Pitt series.
The intrigue, to me, seemed more in depth then the previous books of his I had read.
I think I still secretly hold a slight crush on both Al Giordino and Dirk Pitt to this day.
Great, fun reads. Intrigue and super spy/hero shenanigans.

Best Cussler yet. A little slow at the beginning but picked up.

Honestly, kind of a let down. The book hardly has Pitt in it and hardly has any adventure. Or even solving of anything or marine salvage. Most of the book is dedicated to the Russians mind controlling of the president. And I just wasn’t here for that.

Also, I don’t know why Cussler feels the need to make women naked for no reason. Loren would not under any circumstances take her dress off to work out while captives of the Russians. Like… no.

Great book. The plot in this story is very interesting and I found it hard to put this book down once it started to get into the political intrigue.

At best, this book should have two stars. The science behind this book is bafflingly wrong. I know suspension of belief is something in any book, but memory transference and mind controlling micro chips? The science Cussler used was utter bullshit, to put it nicely. Fortunately, he does seem to be - at least mildly - starting to make his female characters have actual depth. Less fortunately, this book does make some racial assumptions that annoyed the piss out of me.

Otherwise, the plot is half decent. The boat swap was great. Obvious, but great. The underground ship bunker was cool, very spy movie-esque. But the whole reason for the plot centered on some really bad science that I just can’t buy. Sorry, but I’m not really that sorry.

I definitely don’t recommend this book.

One of the better books I have read in a long time, excellent thriller. You have just got to love how Cussler pulls all these seemingly random strands together.
