I hate this book. But also I couldn't DNF it because I was so angry and wanted SOMETHING to go right... right? Wrong.
This cannibal is invincible?! He was shot twice, had an ax in him, and who knows what else yet he STILL survived?! Basically, everyone died. The people who had the opportunity to shoot him all missed. The gore was DISGUSTING. The cannibal could see ghosts and he has super-sonic hearing. And you're going to tell me this BIG DUDE who apparently has the mental capacity of a second grader can fit through windows in a cabin and has enough awareness to have an alternate personality that is smart and knows to set the camp on fire so he can leave. We got a glimpse of him living a normal life and going to work for what? For no reason. It was irrelevant to the book. OH AND THEN HE GOT AWAY. Two people survive him and he still gets away.

Dumb. I hate this book

The title gives a perfect description of what this book is about. This follows a group of young adults at a secluded cabin with a crazed killer that slaughters hikers for fun and for food and it is the perfect Fall/Halloween vibe book. I thought this was very entertaining and right up my alley in terms of what I look for in horror. It's fast paced, very graphic and some moments left me with my mouth hanging in pure disgust, but I liked it. I did like the fact that we got the perspective from the killer and seen some of the action from their eyes. I was hoping that this would have done something more original, but it felt very typical with your everyday horror, cannibal, slasher type of movie out there. I don't think this will be for everyone, but if you like the more graphic side of horror I think you would enjoy this.

Camp Slaughter is marketed as a slasher book. This book follows a group of friends who rent out a cabin in the woods but don't realize there is a murderous cannibal living nearby. One by one, they start to die off and have to fight for their lives.
Oh boy. I hate writing negative reviews because I don't like being negative but this one was not it for me.
First off, this is marketed as a slasher which I think it accomplishes on some fronts and fails on others. It accomplishes it in the fact that we have a very gore heavy book. This book definitely took the slasher part of it and really described it. That was one thing it did well. The descriptions were graphic enough that I could see it as a movie in my head. However, it did fail for me on all other fronts.
When I watch a slasher, there is always at least on character I'm rooting for. I found one or two characters in this I could tolerate and wanted to root for but then they died. I was left with the surviving characters being so bland and one dimensional that I wanted them to get got by the killer. I was confused why those characters got to live when the genuinely good and fleshed out characters had to die.
This also follows the perspective of the killer in this and I don't know why. I think it was trying to make you sympathize with him but I didn't feel any sympathy at all. If anything, it felt like that perspective was used so we can see the murders happen and what he was doing when we weren't with the group. The killer reminded me of Jason from Friday the Thirteenth and if you seen those movies and read this book, you'll know why. It just didn't do anything for me.
Also the ending wasn't my favorite. I get that it's setting up for the rest of the series but there is no resolution at the end of this. It just falls of and is the end and nothing else it laid out. I know there is going to be another book but I don't think I'll be reading it.
This book really tried to be a slasher and I really wanted to love it but it fell flat for me. What I was expecting and what I got was very different. Now, if you are interested in reading this, please do pick it up. For me, it just wasn't it but if you feel like you might like it, please do pick it up.

This was a very fast-paced read! Around the beginning I did find some typos which threw me off the story a little - being an English teacher all the time apparently.

I really like the action in this story but I was also saying “nah I wouldn’t do that - go the other way” and did frequently call some of these characters stupid.

Not sure if I really enjoyed the ending though…

The plot was well thought out. I didn’t really like the back story for Ignacio and sympathising with his character at all! How come he hasn’t been caught? Wouldn’t the police have combed the woods or ‘camp slaughter’ with all these missing campers? Seems sus to me 🤷‍♀️

Pumped for Sergio Gomez’s next book set to come out this year! I want to know what happens next 🙃
