Not my favourite of this series, but I still really enjoyed myself. There were some moments I was a bit iffy on, but overall a delight as usual! Some standout moments for me was whenever Marcus raged against the machine (aka his awful mother).

It Happened One Autumn
5 Stars

Synopsis
It is hate at first sight for Marcus Marsden, Earl of Westcliff, and the brash American heiress, Miss Lillian Bowman. He sees her as brash and ill-mannered while she perceives him as arrogant and snobbish. The only problem is that they can't seem to keep their hands off each other. Will they be able to get past their differences and accept that they are perfect for one another?

Review
Delightful and fun.

The writing and dialogue is excellent and the influence of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice is very much in evidence from the load and boorish parents to the slightly shady suitor (although St. Vincent is much sexier than Wickham) and the arrogant hero who is brought to his knees by the unconventional heroine.

Marcus and Lillian have an all-consuming passion and chemistry that sizzles the pages. Their opposites attract romance with its witty banter and steamy scenes is wonderful. Marcus is sexy in his stuffiness and struggles against his attraction to a woman he perceives as beneath him (Darcy anyone). Nevertheless, the vibrant and headstrong Lillian breaks through all of his barriers.

The perfume aphrodisiac motif was original and entertaining although the "secret ingredient" was obvious from the start.

The ending is unexpected and exciting, and it will be fascinating to see how St. Vincent redeems himself in the next book - the epilogue ensured that I would read the book immediately.

Dropped at the end of chapter 14, but annoyed enough to rant.

Honnestly I'm very surprised by the rating on this book. Maybe it gets better, but I'm more than 50% in and judging by some spoilers I read, it doesn't.

Spoilers below.

I was promised an uptight english aristocrat in the person of Marcus, and an fiery and clever young woman in Lillian, and all I got was a sexual pedator and a whining and spoilt child. :(

I don't mind annoying characters that redeem themselves through a book, but honestly after the third time Marcus forced himself on Lillian, I had enough to make up my mind.

I was reading this because I started with Devil in winter and absolutely LOVED this book. I wondered a lot about skipping this one as St Vincent appears and has a big role in it, but I'm glad I did, it would have put me off Lisa Kleypas books.

I never understood why St Vincent was and pretended to be such an asshole in this book (based on spoilers and Devil in Winter) but now I know: the author needed a bigger asshole than the one she created with Marcus. Honestly that's it.

So yeah.

Still love Lisa Kleypas and the Wallflowers tho.

Ok. Honestly I in no way see how St. Vincent can redeem himself right now. I can get being desperate but he was gross in this book. He basically said he can’t rape her because he’ll make her like it lol. I get time difference etc, but he’s awful lol.

Anyway, I didn’t quite like in this and the last book that the man comes across even to me to completely dislike the female and then randomly they have a personality transplant and their all hearts and flowers lol. I just can’t see the progression of their feelings sometimes and it feels a bit jarring when it happens.

Hated the Countess. She was vile too. Completely unbearable and I was hoping she’d just be a grumpy bitch but she’s definitely and evil hag and I’m unsure why anyone ever bothered with her ever.

Will continue the series hopefully before the end of this month, otherwise I’ll have a go in March.
