Some of the writing makes it a 3.5 for me; a story where you have to parse out the meaning of what's going on can be a bit tiresome. But Phephelaphi will stay with me.

"It was about loving her own eyebrows, before he had passed his fingers over them."

This books started strong and I was enchanted by the beautiful, descriptive language. Unfortunately that is the same reason I ended up not finishing it. Eventually the overly effusive language became exhausting to sort through and find a real story. This will absolutely be a good fit for some and the author has a beautiful way with language but there just wasn’t enough story construction for me to finish.

Very eloquent writing style. Very simple storyline. Got kind of confusing from time to time.

Utterly beautiful book, a mediation on colonialism and the body as a site for intervention, encroachment and freedom. Lyrical and intense- it packs so much into a mere 150 pages. Going to try and read everything she’s ever written.

This book is challenging because you have to read between the lines to see the meaning behind some metaphors. I'm guessing this is the way people would speak in real life as well, as the metaphors concern taboo and/or triggering topics.

This is a good read to see life from a different perspective and in a different environment. There is some beautiful and moving writing surrounding the difficult topics, but there are also joyful and loving parts.
