Katie Reus doesn't put her characters in a situation that she can't write them through. Her plot was good but there were too many sex-on-the-brain interruptions.

A little less on the page fillers and I could bump this up a star. I heard books further along in the series are better. I'll have to give them a try.

Sophie suspects that her company is involved with some illegal activities. She gets proof, but doesn't realize that she has also become a target.

Jack--Sophie's boyfriend, Sam, when they were teens--is an undercover operative for the NSA. Sophie thinks Sam died in Afghanistan, and Jack/Sam has since had facial surgery to change his appearance.

Jack is assigned to look into the possible illegal dealings of Sophie's company. There are things about Jack that remind Sophie of Sam, but of course he's dead.

An attempt is made on Sophie's life, and Sophie and Jack go on the run. If they survive, will Jack break cover and admit who he is? If he does, will Sophie forgive him for keeping the truth from her?

Targeted is a thrilling romantic suspense that will have you holding your breath as you turn page after page as fast as you can read. You'll be in suspense because of the danger, but also because of their relationship.

I'm a big fan of Katie Reus's Moon Shifter Novels, but this book blows them away.

DNF ~ the narrator is pretty good (though I tend to prefer two narrators when a book has perspective shifts like this one), but after more than 3 hours of listening I just can't figure out why I'm here. The questions don't leave me wanting more ~ they just leave me annoyed. Why did Jack have plastic surgery and a name change? There's no catalyst given and nothing in the story leads itself to explaining other than so Sophie, who he's never reasonably expected to have contact with again, won't recognize him. Why does Sophie think Sam (now Jack) is dead? Sophie keeps mentioning something happened to her after Sam/Jack left, but it's just continuously dangled out there without any reason. And why did Sam/Jack leave? I'm all for slowly revealing backstory ~ but this is painfully slow and repetitive. The action scenes are OK, but drown out by constant internal dialogue that sounds more like teenage hormones than adult attraction. This book has fairly low reviews compared to the rest of the series... maybe I'll just skip to book 2.

a really great read full of action, and the redemption of a man who lost his love and gave up his life but is rediscovering himself as he rediscovers that love and gets to begin life a new. I can't wait to find out whose story will be next though i have my suspicions. Another wonderful series.

I enjoyed this one. Lots of sexual chemistry/tension between Jack and Sophie, which had me anxiously awaiting the moment they gave into it. The plot moved at a good pace and Katie Reus did enough "world building" to give us an idea as to who these Deadly Operatives were. Can't wait for more to this series.

My review per Amazon:
There really aren't words for me to say how much I loved this story. I love all things Katie Reus, but this has become my favorite of her romantic suspense stories, because there was just so much action and "who done it" going on! I loved that we were able to get a peak into the pasts of Sam/Jack and Sophie, but doing so never slowed down the pace of the story, which I thought was fantastic. The idea behind the Black Death 9 group, and the cases they deal with, was intriguing. Ms. Reus, as usual, wrote really solid characters & I'm looking forward to seeing them again in the next book. I'd love to see how Sophie and Jack are doing & of course, I'm curious about what's going on with Levi. Another part of the book that I loved, was Ms. Reus' attention to detail when describing the setting. Without being overly wordy, she does a great job of making the city of Miami and its surrounding areas come to life. It's a testament to her skills that she can have so much going on in a book, and no one aspect takes over. The action, romance, setting and plot flowed perfectly!
I cannot believe we have to wait until next fall for more of this series...but wait I will!

A few of my favorite quotes:

I love this section, because it shows how from the very beginning, Sophie would stay with Jack and do what needed to be done. She was helpless to deny the intense bond they had, despite her inability to explain it.

~"Every time she looked into his eyes, she saw Sam. It actually explained her insane erotic draw to the man who could be her enemy. Her body was at war with itself. Desire and fear battled each other for dominance. Unfortunately desire was kicking fear's ass." pg 80

My favorite description of Jack!
`"Mr. Tall, Sexy, and Inappropriate Timing." pg 130

When Mr. Tall, Sexy and Inappropriate Timing loses his cool:
~"...And that kiss was because I needed it!" pg 244
~"All the woman had to do was smile and he was lost." pg 265

Hope those lines helped to spur your interest in the book! Katie Reus writes fantastic romantic suspense...and Targeted is a great start to her new, edgier series!
