I’m sure there’s other books that could absolutely WRECK you but why not do it in 200 pages and with the most gorgeous illustrations that seem to physically pull you into the book? Emotional AF. Thought I was doing okay and the last few pages did me in.

It has been a few hours since I finished reading this book and I've finally settled on giving it a three and a half stars. I had initially given it a four and half stars purely because Patrick Ness is one of my favorite authors. Also, the message of the book and situation of Conor, the protagonist, were things that I could relate to.

But I still kept thinking about it and decided on this final rating. A lot of people love this book and I understand why. I've read reviews of people who have given it five stars and those who gave it a one star. As for me, I got stuck in the middle. I like it enough but to me personally, there was little emotional impact. It's a serious book as it delves with themes such as grief, anger, loss, and such. But again, there was not enough heart to move me. I dunno, I feel like I was not in the right mood to read it - I'm currently reading a psychological thriller and a high fantasy. And I guess I just wasn't in the mood for YA but I forced myself to because I've wanted to read this book for the longest time. I'm definitely going to give this a second chance once I'm in the mood for YA/middle-grade books.

Would I recommend it? Yes. Definitely. But be warned. It's a sad, sad book.

PS
Bonus points for the illustrations and the front cover!
