WARNING - extremely graphic, horrifying depictions of rape, pedophilia, and incest. I thought I would be okay reading it and I was very wrong. I’m going to think about it for the rest of my life. This is not something that should be taken lightly. Handle your heart with care.

Overall, I thought this was a good book. It definitely sucked me in, the family dynamic was interesting from the beginning. The writing style was different from anything I’d read before, and the imagery and ties to nature were beautifully written. I found myself attached to the main character Betty, her father, and some of the siblings, and definitely found myself wanting to keep reading and see where the plot was headed. I feel like it sort of fell off for me in the last 150 pages or so. It just got too dark and tragic to the point where it felt a bit melodramatic. It was a bit too much of an emotional roller coaster towards the end with not much plot to back it up.

the beauty and sorrows of girlhood, woven tightly with threads of generational trauma. sour racist words spat by little children who mirrored their parents’ behaviour.

heartache and sibling bonds that either have to be kept as tightly as possible or severed off like a rotten leg.

whimsical tales from a faraway land told by a father, who learnt it from his predecessors and they themselves heard it from the people before them.

after all the obvious (and triggering!!!) themes it tackles, the novel also speaks of the essence of the unspoken word. tales must be passed on in one form or another, be it in a harsh truth or a beautiful lie with a seed of honesty. the written or spoken fables in our lives help us overcome difficult realities; this is what betty’s father’s stories meant to her.

betty is a beautiful novel about the resilience of a young girl, generational trauma and breaking the cycle. and so much more.

(it has every single trigger warning possible though so proceed with caution!)
