I enjoyed what this book was trying to do. Uncovering the "real" story of the background and leadup to the death of two young, Asian girls who end up in the foster system. How it affects the different people involved and how stories can get twisted along the way.

And yet I just wasn't sold. Maybe it was the audio that I didn't enjoy - I just can't sink into narration that includes music and sound effects? Or maybe it was the writing style which depicted what was happening but didn't have me really engaging with the tragic things that were happening to characters. Maybe it was the multiple perspectives and bouncing around the different timelines.

Either way, I wasn't engaged in this story the way I feel I should have been.

Skimmed aggressively. Why do I read literary fiction? Every now and then I go back, try it out, shudder, and run away quickly. Everyone is so unhappy, and it's all the same way - hiding because they've been hurt and they fear being hurt more, so they pull farther into themselves and alienate the people around them. Jess's feelings about Trevor and sex and romance were very aggravating. I have no patience for women who want their men more manly. It's immature and undeveloped. We've been pestering men to be more emotionally available, and you have one! Hooray! And you don't want him. You want some manly macho guy who doesn't ask what you like, who just somehow psychically knows. You know what asking is? That's consent. How's about we stop stigmatizing that, m'kay? Finally,
Spoilerwe never do find out what happened to the girls! That was the only reason I kept with it. Ugh!

Was on the edge of my seat! Dark and fascinating, heartbreaking, the racial dynamics are complex and believable.
