Very much feels like a middle/transition story. Author has issues with writing female friends - the main character still has none, and the only female characters who show up are unhelpful at best. The worldbuilding is getting a lot more rich and the romance builds well, though. Find it baffling how poorly she's treated by her father - just no respect at all, or by any of the "consuls". She's being gaslit by them all and it's frustrating to watch her continue to want to be with them. Seems saner to ditch them and hang out with daemons instead.

Uff. What a roller-coaster of a book. I'm trying not to cry right now.

Poor Piper! At this point, I really wouldn't mind reading a book where she gets to just hang out, eating cake all day, the girl has been through enough, surely! Still, we get some substantial plot developments, repeated hits to the feels and a whole tangle of plot threads to resolve, so this series shows no signs of slowing down.
I must say though... I'd love for Piper to get a female friend. The book starts promisingly on this front, but that abruptly ended. Then I got my hopes up with Seiya, but yikes, were those hopes dashed and then some. Though her motivations and beliefs are fascinating. All the women in this world seem to be variations of mean and/or evil, this is a bit of a bugbear of mine in female-led fantasy in general. You can still be special, beloved by all the guys AND have a good gal pal, just saying.

This series has finally grown on me, probably because Piper has literally and figuratively come into her power. One of Annette Marie's common storylines seems to be a gutsy girl who doesn't have much power, at least not in comparison to supernaturals, who is surrounded by hot supernatural guys. If I pretend this is manga, I find myself much more forgiving, amd find the series fun. I'm glad that Piper is leveling up both in magical and emotional/intellectual power, and that the political element of the storyline is starting to develop.
