Really liked the humor of Gin and it made this first volume a lot more interesting. Other than that the story was ok. I enjoyed it but I don't plan on picking up any further volumes. I'll probably just watch the anime instead.

I’m not the biggest Shonen reader, however, Gin Tama is pretty fucking iconic so I wasn’t surprised in the slightest by how much I ended up liking it. First off, the lesson titles are so funny, I feel like I haven’t read a manga with a good selection of chapter titles in a very long time. I also really miss this exaggerated art style because the characters here are already so unhinged, but the art really elevates it with the absolutely ridiculous way some of these faces are drawn. Something else that I really liked was how they broke the fourth wall! I don’t know if I’d go out of my way to finish reading the manga, but I’ll be watching the anime for sure.

You want to read a manga, you say. You want to read one not that popular, you say. Well, i have found the manga for you!

Basically, this is a swords manga set in the future. But add in a dabble of aliens, a sprinkle of foreigners, a lot of poverty, a dash of gallantry, and a generous amount of humor like One Punch Man's.

This is was so fun!! and the bonus manga in the back was hilarious too!

It's most like these manga/animes; Bleach, One Punch Man (especially this), Yu Yu Hashikuo (whoops spelled that wrong sorry!), and some other contemporary manga set in Japan.

Lesson 001: 5 stars
Lesson 002: 3 stars
Lesson 003: 2 stars
Lesson 004: 3 stars
Lesson 005: 3 stars
Lesson 006: 4 stars
Omake Dandelion: 4 Stars

The blending of humor, interesting flashbacks, and blending personalities makes the beginning of the Gin Tama series a blast. There are some lows in this volume: the introduction of Kagura, the thief in Lesson 004. But the highs return with the backstory to Gintoki and his crashing into an adult entertainment ship as well as running away from the police. The extra story, Dandelion, was a good encompassing story with a great life lesson.

Update 31 May 2019
The rating will remain at three stars. I have rated the lessons again to gather an accurate rating:

Lesson 001: four stars
Lesson 002: two stars
Lesson 003: two stars
Lesson 004: three stars
Lesson 005: three stars
Lesson 006: four stars
Omake Dandelion: four Stars

The cumulative rating is 3.14 stars.

Update
With the adoption of my new rating system, a three star rating is befitting. The original review's detailed paragraph and rating conform to the new rating system. I have decided to rate the lessons again:

Lesson 001: four stars
Lesson 002: two stars
Lesson 003: two stars
Lesson 004: three stars
Lesson 005: two stars
Lesson 006: three stars
Omake Dandelion: four Stars

The cumulative rating is 2.9 stars, allowing for the three star rating.

February 16, 2020
Update
I am not sure if the lesson ratings in the previous update are true but I am convinced that this book does not go below a 2.5 star-rating, because of the positives mentioned, and does not go higher than a 3.5 star-rating, since the cumulative ratings for the lessons has gone from 3.4 stars, to 3.14, and now to 2.9. The 2.9 star-rating seemed to best incorporate the new rating system.

March 15, 2020
Update
I have left the color of the rating as yellow since I am basing the rating off of an immense amount of previous updates that support the rating. I have also changed the rating type from 2.5G to 3CC to correlate with the ratings in the update from August 23, 2019.

I have added a note to this book on the "Goodreads 3.0" document: "I read this book online and I am not sure if the Goodreads version I have chosen is the same as the one I read online".
