4.5 stars. Juliette is now sheriff, and she begins investigating the prior sheriff's desire to go outside. What happens next really starts the wheels turning on this story. Excellent!

Now that we've finally reached a section of the story that includes characters that I care a little more about, I've grown more interested in what's happening in the silo. I really like Juliette as a tough, no nonsense type of person. There isn't quite enough conflict to really make this book all that gripping however, though I did find it interesting how book three is more of a mystery novel then it is sci-fi. Overall though, it was just an okay story.

Interestingly this had my favorite character but it is also the book that has ended the series for me. I just don't really care all that much about the world. The writing is good and I can see where others will like it but I am done with the series.

The third Wool is all about Juliette, and she is a great character! Mr. Howey writes her superbly and she is my favorite so far. By now we are certain there is a big secret that someone is working hard to hide, even through malfeasance. As Juliette digs deeper and follows along Holston's trail, we start to glimpse the secrets of the silo and beyond. But Mr. Howey only gives us a tiny peek, just enough to make our thoughts go crazy with questions. Like Juliette, we have now realized that there is something BIG going on, but we don't know what, or why. Instead we are left with questions and theories and the knowledge that we alone have realized there is a curtain which hides the truth. The bliss of ignorance has left us and we now carry the weight of the unknown. I can't wait to read more. These stories are highly addictive and will keep you up turning pages when you should be sleeping.

The newly-appointed sheriff of a long-term nuclear shelter tries to learn her job while the number of suspicious events mounts around her.

I enjoyed the first two stories in this trilogy, but wasn't really bowled over. Here, Howey kicks the plot into higher gear, and left me interested in reading more, despite my earlier scepticism. None of the plotting (and there is plotting, with a side of conspiracy) is really surprising, but Howey handles it deftly.

Howey has a tendency to take a nice metaphor and drive it into the ground. While this has worked well for K J Parker, who drives her metaphor right down to bedrock and beyond, Howey doesn't have quite the same commitment or (in a short story) the space, and the effect is less successful. It's unfortunate, because in some other places (such as the ending here), he assumes a certain intelligence in his reader. I couldn't say that subtlety is a strong point, but some things don't get underlined when they don't need it.

All in all, a good story, and a satisfying cap to the trilogy, as well as a mild goad to get the next piece. I had anticipated stopping with this story, but there are enough enticements offered that I think I may well get the next batch of stories (as an omnibus).

The mysteries are just getting deeper. I finished this one last night and really wanted to start book 4, but I don't have it yet. Will be buying it on Amazon today. This is a really great sci-fi series by an indie author.

But even down there, her friends in Mechanical had been told since birth not to speak of the outside. It was an easy enough task when you never saw it, but now, walking by it to work, sitting before this view of a vastness one’s brain could not comprehend, she saw how the inevitable questions must surface.

Wow! This partwork took a turn, in a much better direction and gave the story a whole new direction. The first parts were an "ok" read, but this resets the standard and gives a whole new scope as to where this story is now heading. Love the plot, clever and intricate. Keeps you guessing. Can't wait for the next part.
