“Divergent” is a fantastic read.

Beatrice is an active force that I could pull for. She wasn’t just waiting for a guy to save her (::cough:: Disney). And she was just one of the many strong female characters.

I know everyone is comparing this book to “Hunger Games,” but I think “Divergent” is different enough that it stands on its own. At no time did I feel like I was being played, unlike some of the “Twilight” ripoffs.

“Divergent” has a really interesting plot, and Roth builds a beautiful world. I am not sure I really understood the Chicago connection — I think just being vague would be better. As of right now it hasn’t mattered, but maybe later it will.

I read the book in one setting, and my only complaint is the second book isn’t out yet!

I chose to purchase this trilogy because it's all I've been hearing about recently in the way of popular young adult fiction and because the film is coming out in a few months. My little sister loves the series, and several of my friends at college recommended it to me as well. While I personally prefer the tone of The Hunger Games over Divergent, I enjoyed learning about the factions and trying to decide where I would fit best. The idea of a Fear Landscape was also fascinating: an arena of sorts that you enter in order to face and ultimately conquer your greatest fears. Overall, I enjoyed the book. It was clean, entertaining, and I finished the book in a day.

I listened to this on audio at the gym. It held my interest well enough but the whole plot has been done over numerous times. I don't really take young adult books seriously. I'm probably the wrong audience for this book. I would recommend it to a teenager who likes repetition and is bored after reading the Hunger Games.

I love ice cream. Now that I have kids who also love ice cream (or frozen yogurt), they get to eat it with lots of stuff on it. Because they never finish it, I always do, melty, messy swirled up grossness. That's how this book felt to me: like the result of a mixed together mess. I like dystopian YA lit so much though, I ate it anyway. There were just way too many moments that came straight from other, better texts, that it was hard to lose myself in the story. It was also 200 pages too long. And then the interviews at the end made me strongly dislike the author, who seemed thoroughly conceited. Not a must read, but ok if you're into dystopia.

I'm having a very hard time understanding why this book is such a big deal right now. The premise is stupid, even for a dystopian scifi book for teens. The idea that a society would decide to splinter into factions where members only care about one specific character trait makes no sense and it makes the characters all one-dimensional and uninteresting except for the divergent ones. The writing is bland, everyone speaks in the same tone, and the first 3/4 of the book drags on forever. When the final act - the only interesting act - gets underway it is sudden and filled with such questionable decisions that I kept expecting the whole thing to be another simulation. I'm obviously not the target demo here, but this is what it is.

OMG! I never thought I would love this book so much, actually at first I thought it would be similar to The hunger games and in some kind of ideas it is but this book is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo awesome, I am so in love with it. Tris is indeed a very courageous girl. And Tobias? oh dear lord I am in love, totally! I can't wait to read the next one!!
