Gibson creates an imaginative, richly detailed world for Neuromancer. I especially enjoyed the various dilemmas of selfhood and humanity as presented by Wintermute, Armitage, Dixie, and so forth.

However, this book is no light reading: it is dense, convoluted, and at times riddled with obscure jargon. I found myself struggling to continue through a few parts, but I enjoyed the book overall.

5 Stars.

Genre-defining - the base of every single cyberpunk world owes it all to this book, there is no example I can think of that is remotely free of Gibson's influence. The depth and fabric of the world that Gibson evokes is massive - almost too big for such a small book (of which Mieville's Kraken is reminiscent). The constant attention to detail and total originality of mind-blowing.

Coupled with the pulpiness and genre influences of golden age Sci-Fi fiction of the 20th century, this was such a phenomenal and well-defined book. The pacing lurched a little here and there, and the actual 'goal' of the 'heist' is a little convoluted overall, especially with the otherness of the AI - but it comes together under the lack of information that Case has, and is still coherent.

Additionally, the actual influence of Punk, also coming of age around 1977, is very clear. The two-way interactions between this literary piece and the genre runs so deep. Which came first - Dub and Reggae's influence on Punk or on Neuromancer? This was a cultural cornerstone of Punk which really came together meaningfully in 1978-9...

While some of this book is really good with twists and turns that kept me hooked, there is also a large portion of this book that feels really convoluted and difficult to keep up with what is happening. There are lots of jumps in both time and location that feel janky and makes it difficult to keep up with what is happening (at least to me). When the story stays in one place and time it is at its best but then it will start jumping again and that also made the ending extra confusing and a bit disappointing.
