RATING: 4 STARS

When I first picked up this book in August 2019, I found it a bit difficult to read. I was interested in the story, but the way it was written (in interview format) just drove me buggy. I ended up rating it three stars as I never connected with the characters. Fast forward a year later, one of my book club groups picked this as our August read. I didn't get a chance to pick it up before the meeting, as I was hoping to skim through some of it. It worked out to be a good thing, as the ladies in my group were raving about it. Listening to their passion behind the book really spoke to me. And, you know I hate being left out, so I decided to try the audiobook route. I cannot rave enough about the audio...first of all, Jennifer Beals voices Daisy and Judy Greer voices Karen. Having a cast voice different characters really brings the characters and story to life. It beings the interviewing to life. This is a fictional biography of a popular band in 1970s, so there is no big storyline other than what was happening in their life. It was just really interesting and endearing. If you have not tried this one, I suggest you try the audiobook!

Fantastic from start to finish; what an engaging read! Reid's choice to present this story via an oral history is a stroke of genius, as it leads to multiple overlapping perspectives that shed so many different lights on each situation. The time period as well as the wild, crazy rock and roll lifestyle are both captured perfectly through the band's journey. These characters are all so well-drawn that it's hard to believe that they are fictional, and it had the feel of watching an episode of VH1's Behind the Music. I desperately wanted to hear each one of these songs and it was great fun to envision all of the performances in my head. Very enjoyable and rather heartbreaking at times.
