This was a hard book to get through and so is also a hard book to review. It’s such a powerful novella that I can’t imagine giving it anything less than 5 stars but this also isn’t necessarily something you enjoy reading. I will be thinking about this for days, the writing, the emotions, the look at what one person had to endure to survive, and how you make your story your own. Be aware of the triggers before reading this (kidnapping, torture, rape) but if you can, I would recommend Three Days in the Pink Tower, it’s a superb feminist

I really struggled with rating this book. This book is not fun or enjoyable, but it is an important read. I have my own troubled past and it troubled me deeply.  The writer is so brave and I have such respect for her. Please read with care and make sure you are in the right place in your life and mind.

Based upon the author's own kidnapping and rape. This speculative autofiction starts with Josey being kidnapped from her house and taken to a cabin in the woods painted Pepto Bismal pink. The author exacts her own revenge through this story upon the criminals. It is a raw, brutal story with a tarot card sub-plot. Not exactly what one describes as enjoyable but very good nonetheless.

This is a very tough to read novella. It's inspired and heavily influenced by the author's own experience of being kidnapped and assaulted by two men for several days.  This is her retelling and her taking back her power and her helping her younger self through occult and tarot.  There are explicit descriptions of sexual assault and rape in this, so please be aware of you choose to read it.

This is a heavy one to be sure. It contains themes of sexual assault, kidnapping and rape. It also contains themes of magic, agency, survival, and most importantly the theme that no one can take your story from you. No matter how traumatic it is. It is yours to do what you want with it.

𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠: ★★★☆☆ (for fictional story itself)

Let me start by saying that the author of this book is so courageous for sharing this powerful tale with us! I can imagine how difficult, yet healing, it must’ve been to revisit this time of her life.

When the author was a teenager, she was the victim of a heinous crime. This story is a fictionalized retelling of that traumatic experience.

_____________

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫’𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐨 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠. There’s so much bravery in taking control of your own narrative. In doing so, you can take back your power from your oppressor, abuser, wrongdoer, i.e., whoever brought you harm. 𝐘𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐚 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫. 𝐀 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐯𝐨𝐫.

In terms of the fictionalized account of her experience, it wasn’t too graphic or gory. At times, I didn’t feel connected to the story due to the writing style (which may have been intentionally vague). I just needed more in terms of the plot, especially considering it was written in this format.

Overall, if you’re intrigued by true-crime inspired stories with a bit of magical realism, and can withstand the heavy content, check this out. Please look up the trigger warnings prior to doing so.

Goddamn, that was rough. Deff check out the trigger warnings for this one. I gotta say though, the intro should've been an afterword.
