The first book begins with a small introduction that tells the history of this story and includes the (dead?) dream of Guillermo del Toro making a film adaptation. Having read (an earlier draft of) that script I can tell you I would not have been pleased with it. Now if del Toro — or anyone else — wanted to work on an adaptation taking this book as the root: I’d be overjoyed. (Should be noted I have also taken a stab at adapting this story into a screenplay. No one will ever cry over its not being made.)

Good final part to this story, although not quite great.
The art is really wonderful. The antarctic landscapes were just amazing, and the elder things, cthulu spawn and shoggoths were really well done. It's hard to try to make an image for something that is meant to be so far beyond human experience and understanding that it causes madness just to see it, but these were still very cool.
The story came together a bit better in this part, probably because the actual plot was mostly already in place at the halfway point. The second half was just lovecraftian creatures and antarctic vistas, so I loved it.
All in all, very enjoyable read. I would recommend this mostly to people who have already read at the mountains of madness, as you might be a little confused about what's happening in the beginning if you don't already know.

Selbe Empfehlung.
