Holy cow Batman, this was an amazing book!!

Nixon…oh my sweet, crazy, murderous, obsessive, passionate, possessive Nixon. He’s the anti-hero of my dreams. Willing (and capable) of killing a man (or 5) for trying to rape his woman, while at the same time willing to get down on his knees before her and ask her to be his queen. My heart is swooning. He’s the ultimate anti-hero.

Okay before I continue gushing about Nixon, let me get to the story. Very well done! Excellent writing and fast paced. Kept me glued to the pages.

The only thing about the story I didn’t like was that it ended! Seriously, I need more Nixon and Vixen. They are on fire! I loved them. I know a lot if people in reviews didn’t like Vixen, but I actually liked her. I understood their dynamic and the games they played and I could appreciate the appeal. Obviously the game went too far since Nixon started questioning her true feelings. But I still enjoyed the games they played. Super hot! Nixon is delish. Oh wait…I mean the story was great! Lol

Now one little quirk about the writing style I felt was odd was that the author alternated between first person POV and third person POV. During Victoria/Vixen’s POV, it was written in first person. But during Nixon’s POV it was written in third person. I found this odd and a little disorienting, but not so much that I didn’t enjoy the book. It kind of breaks book rules though. Usually you need to pick between one of the two so it’s not confusing. But I still enjoyed it.

Another thing I found interesting about how the story was told was the parts being shuffled up so the middle was told first and then the beginning when they first met after (once she allowed herself to remember). At first I thought this was weird, but afterwards I realize it was genius. In the beginning we needed to wonder if she was really a prisoner still after two years or if she wanted to be there. Getting the beginning after the middle made me wonder, until the beginning was finally revealed and all was made clear, just as it would’ve been for her when she finally remembered. Genius.

The side characters were fun and I came to really love this crazy bunch of criminals. Even Doll, and to a lesser degree Flynn (jury’s still out on him).

Like I said above, I did like Vixen. I think her initial hesitation to verbally give in to Nixon made sense in a lot of ways. Obviously they both enjoyed this game they played quite a bit, so I found their “fighting” and “bickering” actually quite amusing and charming given the circumstances. I loved it when Nixon told her that she was keeping the lamp store in business with all the lamps she broke so she didn’t need to stop breaking them during their fights. Hahaha He’s so perfect…. Sigh

Nixon stole the show though. His character was amazing and the perfect anti-hero in every way. And yes, my crazy ass actually liked that he didn’t soften and turn from a life of crime because of love in the end. I liked that his anti-hero-ness remained true until the very end.

And the sex? Holy cow (I know I already said that). But it was smoking. Nixon is…everything. He’s perfect. He’s sexy and oh so generous in the bedroom and I adore that he’s confident enough to be willing to play this kinky game with Vixen. He lays out the rules at the beginning to keep her safe, knowing this is what she needed (you’ll understand why more after reading). He’s willing to be her villain so she can get what she needs. It’s so self sacrificing and generous and he’s just freakin’ perfect people.

Overall this is an excellent dark romance that those who love captive romances with consensual non-con will enjoy. I don’t even think I would consider this dubious con because their rules for their games were established at the very beginning. Unless you count her “dreams” of Nixon, of course. :)

Anyways I know I enjoyed it! I will definitely be coming back to this one in the future, even if it’s just my favorite parts.

P.S. The biggest problem with this book? No one compares to Nixon! Gosh why does he have to be so damn sexy. How can I move on to other book boyfriends now? I just want more Nixon and can’t stop thinking about him.

Unexpected

This book. I was not prepared. I came into this thinking it was going to a certain type of book based on the blurb. However, the blurb was like bait because it only loosely was somewhat like it but not in the typical sense of captive romance books are. Add in the title and it almost became a foregone conclusion. It wasn't and I was wrong.

What happens when the bad guy is good and the good guy is bad? If the person you are supposed to have actually is endearing and unexpected. Nixon is that guy. The conversations and interactions with Biden are not only engaging but were also swoon-worthy. He reminded me why it is important to not judge a book by it's cover. Both him and Vix were delightful. They fought as beautifully as the loved.

I'll definitely be looking for more from this author. There was a twist at the end and the ending ended abruptly which was weird considering this is a big book. I didn't want it to end as it was that well written. I hope this continues in other books as it truly was astounding and had great secondary characters.

This book came highly recommended to me and I am so glad I took the chance and read it.
Nixon is the quiet, silent type, and it is unnerving to some people. Vixen and Nixon meet in the oddest of circumstances and he becomes her protector and savior.
Captive began in the middle of the book, and at first I wasn't sure about this story beginning like that, but I think it was perfect. The story became very clear only after I was reading the beginning in the second part...And what a story!
It contains plenty of action, a lot of steamy scenes, and so many twists and turns you have to buckle up and enjoy the ride.

if you cannot handle insane levels of toxicity, manipulation and drama then this is NOT FOR YOU
this is not your usual captor-captive romance this is extremely toxic both the mc's disgustingly in love but would jump off the cliff before admitting it. this was my cup of tea the angst the outpouring emotions the fighting to fucking scenarios to breaking down and then back to fucking YEAH IT WAS FUCKING CHAOTIC AND I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT!!!

Nothing beats the feeling of finishing a really good book ♥️ This may not be everyone's cuppa, but it was definitely mine. This was also my first RJ Lewis book and I already have some of her other books lined up to read next. Her writing style is definitely something up my alley. This wasn't as dark as I expected and the story was easy to follow. I was fully immersed from the beginning. This was a long book but I felt that it was too short.

The hero, Nixon, was definitely book husband material if you're into the obsessive-possessive type (which I am). I loved him. I really liked the heroine, too.

The crew was definitely notable as well, though Hobbs was my favourite.

Loved this book, loved the characters, loved the writing style.
