This book fulfills Alabama in a self reading challenge of a book taking place in every US State or territory (16/56).
Heather Webber’s “In the Middle of Hickory Lane” is a charming, heartwarming tale that seamlessly blends elements of mystery, romance, and a touch of magical realism. With its captivating characters and evocative setting, this novel is a delightful escape into a world where the ordinary meets the extraordinary.
The story centers around Emme Wynn, a woman with a troubled past who finds herself drawn to the small, quirky community of Hickory Lane. Emme’s journey of self-discovery and redemption is both touching and inspiring. Webber skillfully weaves Emme’s personal struggles with the secrets and mysteries that shroud the town, creating a narrative that is both engaging and emotionally resonant.
One of the novel’s greatest strengths lies in its richly drawn characters. Emme is a protagonist who is easy to root for, her vulnerability and determination making her both relatable and compelling. The residents of Hickory Lane are equally enchanting, each with their own quirks and hidden depths. Webber’s ability to create a vibrant, close-knit community where everyone’s stories intertwine adds a layer of warmth and authenticity to the narrative.
The setting of Hickory Lane is vividly brought to life through Webber’s descriptive prose. The small-town charm, with its picturesque landscapes and unique local traditions, serves as the perfect backdrop for the unfolding drama and romance. The touch of magical realism, a hallmark of Webber’s writing, is subtly woven into the story, adding an enchanting quality that enhances the overall reading experience.
The plot is well-paced, with a perfect balance of tension and tranquility. The mysteries surrounding Hickory Lane and Emme’s past are slowly revealed, keeping readers engaged and eager to uncover the truth. While some plot twists are predictable, they are executed with such finesse that they still manage to surprise and delight.
Webber’s exploration of themes such as forgiveness, community, and the power of second chances is handled with sensitivity and insight. Emme’s journey is not just about finding a place to belong, but also about coming to terms with her past and embracing the possibility of a brighter future. The novel’s message of hope and the importance of human connection is both timely and uplifting.
If there is a minor flaw, it is that some secondary characters and subplots could have been developed further. However, this does not detract significantly from the overall enjoyment of the story.
In conclusion, “In the Middle of Hickory Lane” is a delightful read that offers a perfect blend of heart, mystery, and a touch of magic. Heather Webber has once again created a world that readers will be reluctant to leave, filled with characters who linger long after the final page is turned. This novel is a testament to the enduring power of community and the transformative potential of love and forgiveness. For anyone seeking a heartwarming escape, “In the Middle of Hickory Lane” is a four-star gem that should not be missed.

A sweet novel about family, traditions and love. Emme has come to hickory lane for the first time to meet her grandmother and cousin. She has a secret which turns out to be that she was arrested after standing up for herself to an assault. Cora is the cousin and she is dealing with grandma Glory dying from brain tumors. Emme falls in love with the town and the family but really thinks she isn't a part of the family because her mother lied to her. She is a part of the family and they all have a mystical side to them.

I found out about myself that I enjoy to read magical-realism, and there are specific authors that write prolifically in this specific genre. One of those authors is Heather Webber. When I saw that my library through the Libby app had In the Middle of Hickory Lane available both in e-book & audiobook format, I didn't think twice I borrowed both of the and read it in two sittings.
As Emme Wynn settles into the charming town of Sweetgrass, Alabama, she finds herself drawn to the whimsical world of Cora Bee Hazelton, a kind-hearted woman with a penchant for gardening and a past shrouded in mystery. Emme is on a journey of self-discovery, seeking to break free from the patterns of her past and find a sense of belonging in a new community. With its blend of magical realism, found family, and small-town charm, In the Middle of Hickory Lane is the perfect for readers that are fond of the magical-realism genre. Perfect for readers who crave uplifting tales of reinvention, and the transformative power of community and love.
