This story is a little too dense for me, and I felt like some of the info was redundant and/or too detailed and could have been left out. That said, I enjoyed it. I've read lots of zombie books, but not many with the perspective of government officials who are trying to contain the disease. I also like that this book gives us readers the perspective of the bad guys, so we get hints of the some of things that are going to happen without getting the whole picture. The plot is more complicated than it seems at first, which kept me on my toes.

Just a few quotes from the first few chapters...

"Javed hadn't been armed and I drilled him in the back so there would be a routine investigation, but my lieutenant told me it was a no brainer"

"After I did a visual on the room I went into my own head and waited, reviewing the number of thong bikinis I'd seen. I was pretty sure the count was twenty-two, and of those at least eighteen had a legal and moral right to wear a thong. It was a good day at the beach."

"I grinned with oreo gunk on my teeth"

The book gives background on the character about how his mom died and his girlfriend died by suicide and he watched her be assaulted. So im sure the crass humor is a coping mechanism that will be explored later in the book but I just can't stomach the "gross military guy who thinks about boobs and makes fun of scientists" vibe.

Fun, and thre were stine interesting variations on the nature of the zombie contagion. But overall, extremely cliche when it comes to characters and themes. Nothing different the from literally every other book in the genre.

It wasn't what I was expecting (horror film zombie story)--it was nice to be surprised for a change. I was trying to get away from terrorist/suspense books but this might pull me back in.
