Fear Nothing by Dean Koontz

It's not that I didn't enjoy Fear Nothing, it's that it didn't grab me. It's a thriller that lacked the thrill I was looking for. The plot was incredibly vague until the last hundred pages or so. With that said, Fear Nothing entertaining if you have patience for a slowly developing plot. Again, a good read, just not a great read.

I don't read a lot of Dean Koontz, because I prefer Stephen King as a writer. Fear Nothing, while enforcing that opinion, was still a good book. The main plot is really interesting--it's along the lines of the mystery-illness-infecting-a-town thing--and Christopher Snow is an engaging protagonist. You root for him to win, even if the story does get a little far-fetched. Koontz has a good creepiness factor to his books, but leaves a bit to be desired in the explanation. We really learned hardly anything about what happens to Moonlight Bay and the people in it. Good thing there's a sequel...

This was in some ways a sequel to
Spoiler[b:Watchers|32423|Watchers|Dean Koontz|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1308458930s/32423.jpg|2200683] and [b:Midnight|64955|Midnight|Dean Koontz|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1308459731s/64955.jpg|21501050]
in plot and themes, respectively. I didn’t know before reading that it would bump against two of my favorite Dean Koontz books, so my expectations were not high going in; nonetheless, the result was an even bigger disappointment as the lackluster plot unfolded because I knew it could have been so much better. A lot could have happened, and a lot could have been scary, but it’s just one pointless, anticlimactic episode after another, mostly within a single night.

This is clearly a single book’s plot stretched into (in theory, eventually) three books, so not much happens in this first book of the series except developing very low expectations of characters’ intelligence and likability, which is doubly annoying when it’s continually shoved down your throat how much you’re supposed to like and believe in them while being subjected to a continual stream of the first-person narrator’s “reasoning,” which has some gaping holes in it. I began to wonder if Christopher Snow were suffering from memory loss or delusions as well as XP. It was brutal, and I grew to hate him, and his annoying jackass of a best friend, and his oh-so-perfect girlfriend (who actually comes out of this smelling most of roses of the three because she hardly figures into the plot at all). I didn’t hate the dog, but I am growing weary of Koontz sanctifying canines without actually giving them unique personalities (interchangeability is a recurring problem with his human characters too, of course, but there are fewer dogs to differentiate from book to book, so some effort would pay off).

If you think all Koontz books are essentially readable, don't let me put you off; this was readable. If you think he peaked in the '80s or maybe you've simply outgrown him, this book will not change your mind.

I read this book a couple years ago and just remembered for some reason that I had read it. To say the least, I wish I could forget that I read this book. I'm honestly surprised it's rated as high as it is. I didn't know it was the first in a series so maybe I should re-read it and then finish the series. However, if it's ANYTHING like I remember, I know I'm going to hate it again.

I’ve never been into graphic novels or comic books (besides the Archie series when I was a kid) and the only reason I decided to read one now was because it’s part of a reading challenge I’m doing for 2023. I picked this one because I recognized the author & I like some of his books.

Unfortunately I can’t say the same for this graphic novel. The premise of it sounded cool with him having a super rare genetic condition and all but his whole night seemed to derail in very dramatic flair that seemed kind of cliche and too over the top for my taste. I thought the illustrations were nice but as far as the story keeping me interested this one fell flat.

Excellent read, a page-turner with developed, interesting characters. Some of it reminded me of The Watchers, because it also has a pretty smart dog.
