A fun girly comic strip series that is very Calvin and Hobbes-esque. While I appreciate comics that appeal to young girls, I wish the cover wasn't so girly because I think my stepson would also enjoy it.

This is a trimmed down version of my review, to view the full review visit The Book Ramble.

Phoebe, a lonely, friendless child, meets a unicorn one day and befriends her. Together the two new friends set out on adventures, like leaf watching and having slumber parties, as they become best friends.

I enjoyed this. I think I probably would have enjoyed it a lot more if I had read it bit by bit as an online comic rather than as a book, simply because reading each page you get a punchline and if you read it altogether it starts to kind of lose the kind of humor that it has. I still really enjoyed this though. The art was adorable, and the jokes were good.

The story follows Phoebe and her unicorn, Marigold, as they meet and become best friends. They begin to do everything together and Phoebe talks to everything that happens to her with Marigold. I think all of this was really cute.

I can definitely say that this is a great book for young girls either way because Phoebe and Marigold, the precocious pair, are fierce and great characters for young girls to look up to. Phoebe is funny and a little weird. I liked that despite being something of a loner she is still adamantly herself. Marigold is sort of rude but loving. Together they have a really great dynamic, making for fantastic comedy.

The art in this book is so cute. I love the style of the art, and the colour palette. I liked Marigold's design in particular which is very...regal? She has a long tail and a very curved, graceful design - which suits her personality so well.

Overall, I liked this book a lot. I would recommend it. I don't think I would, personally, go out of my way to read more of this, but would read it if given the option. Definitely give it a read if you're a fan of middle grade graphic novels.

There are many different problems in this book, like (SPOILER!!) Pheobe got her valentines day card that was going to go to her crush but ended up in a unicorns hooves! But that is another story to tell! She has a pet unicorn!!!! They have lots of adventures together in Pheobe's home and marigolds, too!!!

Marigold is a UNICORN! As well as Phoebe Howell's best friend. A shimmering jewel of a book!

Very funny. I think a lot of the jokes are designed for adults and would go right over a kid's head, which would make it a fun book to read together.
