Still AWESOME! I just order volumes 4-11 from Amazon! Apparently 12 will be the end of the story, which if you read or watched Fushigi Yugi, you know how it ends, and it is NOT good. I don't want to dwell on the impending tragic ending right now though, these books are just too good!

If you're a fan of the anime this issue introduces the origin of the Genbu Shinzaho, which amused me. The characters are starting to really flesh out and I genuinely like Takiko, Tomite, and Uruki. Namame is an interesting addition to the crew.

Hard to follow. Too many characters, some called several names. Generally confusing. A lot of violence in this volume. I'm just not very impressed with this series and don't know that I'll continue much further.

The further along I get in this series, the more I'm convinced it's far superior to the original. Granted, it's written a prequel story written years after the original was completed, so there's obviously room for growth and improvement in Watase's craft as a writer. But I do genuinely think that this is the far better story, and I absolutely enjoy it more than I ever did the original. (Of course, I have never been able to completely shuck my hatred for Miaka and Tamahome as characters, and I can be an adult enough to admit that. There's probably also something to be said for the fact that Watase herself equated Tamahome to a dog and Limdo to a cat, so there's that strike against Tamahome in my books as well. And Limdo is growing on me.)
