I didn't love this book and then really hated the ending... To learn that was how Slaugther chose to wrap up a whole series is what dropped this to a single star. I can't speak for how the rest of the series is, but I'm glad I read this one first - if I'd worked through the whole series and this is how it ended, I would have been livid.

Anyway, this book was typical for Slaughter, but definitely weaker than what I've read from her before. Her penchant for torturing women was a lot less pronounced in this book, so I will give her credit for that, but that was the only redeeming quality. I didn't care much for the characters, there were plot lines that went nowhere and were irrelevant to most of the story and moving through time made the plot hard to follow. I get using time/scene jumps for drama, but in this case, it just made it hard to follow.

I think now that I've gotten a bit more into the crime/thriller genre, especially in terms of series, I'm learning some authors are just not worth reading everything from, and Slaughter might be one of those.

update: i was genuinely in mourning after i finished this book, and couldn’t start another book because i felt i had to wait an appropriate amount of time out of respect. i’ve never taken a book death this personally or hard before.
every voice in my mind is screaming at me to not give this book 5 stars, but i feel like if a book can devastate me this much, it deserves it.still not my favorite in the series though, for obvious reasons. i am heartbroken. i NEVER cry from books, i guess i’m just heartless lol, but i cried at the end of this book. i feared something like this would happen, but every time i finished a chapter i felt relieved because no one was dead. i finally got to the last chapter and i was just so happy for jeffrey and sara and i just thought everyone was going to be safe and happy. i loved these characters so much, i don’t know what i’m going to do now.

Series note: The final book in the Grant County series also published as Beyond Reach.

Karin Slaughter's incredible characterization and spellbinding storytelling abilities are proven once again when Sara and Jeffrey get caught up in another of Lena's messes. Slaughter is one of the only authors who manages to grip the reader for over 500 pages despite the fact that her characters are some of the most unlikable people ever to grace the pages of a book.

There are moments in this story when I couldn't care less if certain characters lived or died, and others in which my heart sped up and even skipped a beat. The ending is simply heart-wrenching, and it is difficult to see how Slaughter will make up for it even though I'm sure she will ultimately succeed.

It will be interesting to see where Slaughter takes her characters from here.

a lot of things were revealed in this book, which I loved. I loved getting to know more about Lena's past and see her hometown. I was intrigued by the role that Ethan Green played in this book, but oh, how I hate him with every fiber of my being.

but for me, the stars of the show will always be Sara and Jeffrey. They were absolutely delightful to read about in this book. I love their love. I'm a complete sucker for Jeffrey now.

and then the most emotionally scarring ending ever happened, that left me devastated.
