That ending had me smiling from ear to ear. Sex positive...SO sex positive!!!!!! Dolly Wilde is an incredible, vivacious character who has inspired me in many ways. Think what you think and say what you think.

I didn't think it would be possible to enjoy this sequel more than I enjoyed How to Build a Girl, but I surely did!

Johanna - aka Dolly Wilde - is still raunchy and hilarious, although slightly less naive a few years later. She makes understandable, wincing mistakes that many 20-something young women would identify with - but the beauty is in how she and her friends realize those are mistakes and what they do about them.

I laughed a shit ton, I cried some, I texted a dear friend who also has read Moran's HtBaG, I wished I had this book in my mid-20s. Fortunately, I'm not too old to love Dolly Wilde and cheer for her. It does feel a little warm-fuzzy at the end - strangely made me think of All Our Wrong Todays by Elan Mastai and The Humans by Matt Haig, despite their differences - but it felt warranted, earned by Dolly and the reader.

Love love love. Pure excellence.

I love Caitlin Moran so very very very very much. I wish that Dolly & John were real.

This one caught me by surprise. Just lovely, romantic and funny and at times totally punk. "Dolly Wilde, meet Joni Mitchell" - made me cry. I haven't read the first one, and I'm not planning to - I liked meeting this character at 19 instead of younger and I have the distinct feeling that this book might be the book which I like the most from this writer.

Johanna is seeing a lot of success. She is 19 years old, writes in the music press and has her own place in London. She might not have a lot of money but she is on chatting terms with several leading lights of Britpop and is in love with John, a rising star. However her love for John is seemingly unrequited, they are stuck at 'best mates' and now he is off on tour. She queries the sexist nature of her job and suddenly is out of work, her father splits from her mother is have his own midlife crisis and suddenly her ill-advised sexual encounter with a comedian has been videoed and the sex-tape is being infamous.
I really wanted to like this book as I find Caitlin Moran a very engaging writer but it was just too much for me. Perhaps it's my age but crude sexual descriptions marred quite a likeable story about the girl from Black Country finding her way (and true love) in fashionable London. Of course this is a fictionalised version of Moran's own life and there are some really funny parts.

I picked this up at my local train station book library as I wanted an easy read. I wasn’t overly taken with the writing but the story won me round in the end.
