I was amazed by the turn of events in this book, how everything occurred, what took place, and the emotions within the words of this story. This was the start of Mara and Edward's relationship. The beginning of it all. It was heartbreaking, but also showed strength and courage, that in spite of the bad that love prevailed. A story that takes you back in time to show how and why things transpired the way they did. It's an exceptional story and a must read.

I initially considered skipping this book in favor of the third... I am SO glad I didn't do that. I thought a backstory for which I already knew the ending wouldn't be interesting, but as with the first, Bone has this magical way of writing that transports me into Mara's mind. Again, I found myself feeling her love, and her torment. Her loathing of Phillip. I experienced it with her. And although the majority of this book occurs before the story in Book 1, I understand why it is second in the series. I would not have enjoyed Book 1 as much if I had read this one first.
Having Edward's perspective was interesting. It was additive because it helped confirm Mara's trustworthiness, and knowing what was happening with Edward helped me feel what Mara felt. [I wouldn't have been nearly as upset with Phillip if I hadn't known the truth.]

If you read the first book and loved it then you will love the second book even more. KL Bone takes us back in time to Edwards imprisonment and shows us how it changed not only Mara but the rest of the guards of the Lorcan Court. This story shows the vulnerability of Mara while trying to be strong and never giving up on the man she loves all while Edward continues not to break over the years he is held captive by another court. Kl Bone has taken a love story that spans centuries and broke it down to show us "There are many things that can destroy one's honor: the breaking of a sacred vow, betrayal, an innocent lie. Yet of all these threats, none has ever, nor will ever, hold the destructive power of love." 100% recommend reading this story.
