Not sure how I missed this classic back in the day. After all, it is in the "Appendix N: Inspirational and Educational Reading", of the original Dungeon Master's Guide, which was like a bible to me for many years.
It was definitely a bit dated, but that just made me like it more. Not sure women nowadays would appreciate the female characters, but I still thought it was a fun little adventure with memorable characters and a bunch of myth and legend woven together.

Takie 2.5 gwiazdki. Ma sporo uroku jako lekka przygodówka w której tle druga wojna światowa staje się elementem zmagań dobra ze złem a zarazem zmieści się trochę rozważań o tym, że cel nie uświęca środków. Fabularnie rozkręca się dość późno, ale jak już się rozkręci, to czyta się przyjemnie. Tylko... te obrzydliwie papierowe postaci kobiece, mające tyle głębi, co rozkładówka. Bardzo widać, że wielowymiarowi są mężczyźni, a kobiety mogą kusić, stanowić zagrożenie, pomagać, być nagrodą, ale nigdy nie są ludźmi. Nawet Alianor, pozornie mająca spore znaczenie dla fabuły, zaradna i samodzielna, rozkleja się, robi zazdrosna, zakochuje w bohaterze od pierwszego wejrzenia i może być infantylizowana.
Plus mamy też seksowne nastolatki gdzieśtam na marginesach. Można by na tym uczyć, jak nie należy pisać perspektywy, jeśli nie chce się uzyskać ordynarnego male gaze.
Ale chciałam przeczytać, bo było na liście w Rękopisie znalezionym w smoczej jamie Sapkowskiego, a ja tę listę pracowicie wypożyczałam z biblioteki jako nastolatka. I tej książki nigdzie nie mogłam dostać, a teraz trafiła mi się za złotówkę przy bibliotecznej wyprzedaży. Zaspokoiłam ciekawość, nie było najgorzej, ale, używając Waltonowej nomenklatury, sexism fairy, level hard.
(Ciekawe, czy SF Andersona jest lepsza.)

The story as a whole game together pretty well, but the individual plot lines within were short and disappointing. I feel like this was just an amalgamation of the monster of the week and the love story involved was illogical at best.
That being said, it’s a nice touch into a fantasy universe intertwined with a real life story but a lot of ideas needed to be expanded on.

I really enjoyed this book, especially seeing its clear influence on other fantasy such as D&D (e.g. the troll) and Michael Moorcock’s Eternal Champion. In fact, many of the Eternal Champion elements are here, including Law vs Chaos, reincarnation, parallel worlds, and lost love. Moorcock’s first John Daker novel, the Eternal Champion, seems to be a much darker twist on the very same premise as Three Hearts and Three Lions. This book’s influence on fantasy is huge, both directly and indirectly through Moorcock.
