Holy shit. I was gripped from the first page til the last.

I should have hated this. It’s about writers, the meaning of literature, the literary establishment. But it’s also about what sustains us, home, love, understanding, secrets. It’s not afraid to contradict itself, to show the ways African writers try and mostly fail to be African writers, to be everything and yet worship the void that is a great novel. It’s ultimately about the morality of art and of those who create. Questions those of us who love literature need to chew on. And Sarr isn’t giving any easy answers, he’s just sending us on a journey, where we are met with textual and metatextual and subtextual responses that elaborate and contradict and ultimately leave us in the wilderness, stoned, or maybe in a park in Paris?

The writing here is superb. Gripping, propulsive, complex yet clear. The novel includes many forms and each is given the voice needed. Though this was thematically and structurally complex, it never lost sight of emotions or plot as the reason to keep reading.

I’d compare this to “Too Loud A Solitude” by Bohumil Hrabal, another masterpiece.
