More of a 3.5 than a 3, but as we all know, Goodreads will update everything but the rating system. This had a lot more action than I remembered it to, and moved a bit faster than the first installment. Seph starts off with a little more personality than Jack, due to the trauma he's already dealt with

to the events of this book. He grows throughout, and while he definitely has some plot armor through the 'you were simply born with incredible power! with little training you can do it all!' trope, we do see that he struggles to control his powers, both before and during the events of this book, before he finally gets a really win. I do remember liking Linda and Hastings a lot more as a child; but rereading these now about 14 years later, they're quite unlikable. It was a throw in sentence towards the end, but I'd also forgotten that
Spoiler Warren actually lived at the end, and was hinted at coming back.
. I'll have to wait and see if he actually shows up in The Dragon Heir or not. I do very clearly remember thinking Jason was my favorite (and yes, I do also remember what happens at the end), so I'm hoping the next book lives up to my memories of it as well!

This was a fast read, I couldn’t put it down! I love the story line, and it’s better than the first one, but the writing is still lacking.

3.5 stars. Definitely better than the first one but didn’t quite blow me away. It saved the rest of the series for me and I’ll probably actually read them now (I had planned on DNFing the series of this one wasn’t better than the first). I liked Seph and his story and I’m interested to see where the rest of it goes

This book had its ups and downs. There were parts that I really enjoyed but then there were also parts that I didn't like. The plot of this book was pretty good - I think I liked it more than that of the first book - but the magic system and the world are just okay and not super original or anything. However, I did already feel a little more attached to the characters than in the first book. I'm definitely trying out the sequel!

A fantastic continuation of The Heir Chronicles. Cinda Williams Chima expounds and enriches her world with the addition of new characters, new magics, and new ‘types’ of people in the world. I love how Seph sees his relationship with
Spoilerhis newly discovered parents—first shock and anger that they had abandoned him, but as more becomes clear to him, he understands and accepts the painful and difficult situation that his mother must have been in.

Also, probably the best audiobook narrator that I've ever listened to. The narrator made it fun to listen to with voice inflections and accents appropriate for the book.

Great writing and exciting situations.

I definitely think that this book was an improvement on The Warrior Heir, but I still find myself struggling with Chima’s writing and the predictability of some story lines. I didn’t buy Seph and Madison as a couple AT all - I didn’t feel like there was anything worthwhile about their relationship or chemistry. Hopefully some queer characters pop up that’ll give us a break from the heteronormativity I’ve felt so far. I know that this is Chima’s second novel, one more before her acclaimed Seven Realms series.

I’m excited and optimistic to finish her works, and hope to see an improvement between The Dragon Heir and The Enchanter Heir.

Liked the first one better. Had a hard time feeling connected to the main character.

Better than Warrior Heir? I think not. Jack is a more likable character. Although I do love me some torture.
