WARNING : BAD REVIEW AHEAD
3.5/5⭐️
Story and plot are kinda meh. It's not really a good book, lacking substance but THE ROMANCE is good , not amazing but good and cute and I nearly cried at the end.
Dee is a good character and I just want to protect her forever , I relate to her a lot.

I liked this book enough to give it three stars I feel as though the last few chapters of the book were the best parts.

So, did I bawl at the end? Indeed.
Overall, this book is very much up my alley with it's "cozy" found family-esque theme combined with the mysterious plot and the mission these teenagers are being sent on.
However, I think there could have been much more exploration of the characters and the lore, it felt like I just dipped my toes into the story and then it was already over. There were also some plot points that seemed to come out of nowhere and didn't quite aid the storyline, which unfortunatly knocked this read down for me quite a bit.

I'm torn between three and four stars. This was an extremely smooth read, one that could be done in a night because of how fast the plot and pace goes. With that being said, there were times when the writing was indeed a bit sloppy that it took you from the story. I loved the fact the author referred to fairy tales from the very beginning to the last few lines of the book. I loved the world she created where demons came out of hiding and were willing to have open pacts with humans. But aliens and a sudden invasion thrown in the last 50 pages of the book? After building up the unique demon lore and mystery for so long?

At least - for me - it was the twist I never wanted and found it impossible to look past.

There were moments in this story that just seemed too difficult to get behind, an example being when Gremma escorts Dee to gather her belongings and just happens to pull out a damn AX out of no where. Why would a prep teen have an ax? Was she carrying it with her the whole time? Did the father not notice it BEFORE he started to threaten Dee? And what about Cora's story? She was written off as the mom-bitch-friend who had some guy murdered, wanted to protect everyone - but just kidding, now she's free so forget them but still get teased with her unfinished backstory. There were far too many odd moments like this or loose ends.

And yet - you have BEAUTIFULLY written scenes like Cal's death. Where you expected at least one of them to die, but absolutely not in that way. And the ending? Tears. The Harry Potter books, the CT scans, the fact they killed James in the first place in a poetic fashion. You knew he'd deny getting his heart back, but you didn't expect what actually happened.

Putting all those awful scenes and amazing scenes together, leaves you confused and stuck somewhere between 3 to 4 stars. At least for me.

“A life is not diminished by the fact that it wasn’t romantic or short-lived.”

This was amazing. I loved Dee. She was amazing and relatable and one of the best main characters ever. I loved the character development of James; at first I thought he was a little pretentious but I loved how he grew as a person. I loved the female friendships between Dee, Gremma and Riley! Finally an actual female friendship! It’s been very lackluster in the books I’ve read and I’m so glad this book had it. I loved the writing and the setting. Portland was an amazing choice to have has the setting for this story. I absolutely loved everything about this story. It made me cry, it made me feel things a book has not made me feel in a long time. 5/5 ⭐️
