I like the idea of Violet and Xaden and like them both as characters but I did think their romance felt a bit rushed and awkward. It was barely enemies to lovers… Violet knew she should hate him but never really seemed to. Xaden seemed to fall for her very quickly as well. Update: Upon thinking more about this I’ve come to the conclusion that maybe they weren’t ever really enemies. Since we know Brennan was alive we can assume he told Xaden about his sister Violet who was training to be a scribe. Perhaps the first time he saw her (we interpret this as hatred) it is really a look of surprise and the hatred could be directed to her mother for forcing her to come to rider quadrant. If I’m choosing to believe this, it changes the dynamic between Xaden and Violet and their relationship fits better in my mind. This was one of my biggest issues, so I bumped my rating up .25 stars.Moderate: Death of parent, Gore, Murder, War, Death, and Violence

Our main character Violet is literally Mare Barrow from Red Queen series (not to mention the ending of this book when her brother shows up…It was all the Shade energy I needed. If he dies in the second book, it’s just actually Shades story and if Brennan and Rhionna get together, it’s actually the character from Red Queen) and all the dragon aspects are from Eragon, the schools and how they are broken up are giving Divergent and Hunger Games mix. All of these mashed is this book, nothing totally out of left field. It was honestly a really average story. I’m not sure why everyone is going WILD for this book, dont get me wrong it’s an entertaining book.Graphic: Sexual content

“I take the fertility suppressant” (this line had me rolling. Love my fantasy books that will do the absolute most to say they are protected from having children)evreardon's review against another edition

Was if original? No.
Were there cliches? Yes.
Did I devour it? Yes.
Was it fun as hell? Also yes.
Was it sexy? Duh.
It reminded me most of The Poppy War mixed with Divergent.

1. It was an engaging story that kept me reading. It was also funny in places.
2. I liked the main character and the relationship she had with the dragons.
3. The author had dreamt up a very interesting fantasy world, even though I'm not much of a fantasy reader.
4. Even though the end was more setting up the next book, it had a twist that I did not see coming.
The bad:
1. Some of the cliches in the book were cringe-worthy. Some of the dialogue seemed a little forced.
2. I'm not big on f-bombs and they were used liberally in the book.
3. I'm definitely not found of graphic sex scenes and there were a couple in the book. That was stated at the beginning however.
4. Some of the plot twist were telegraphed and didn't surprise me.
With all of that said, I will probably read the next book in the series but wasn't blown away by the book like some people are.
